My husband and I are getting ready to purchase an A-frame camper. We've found a 2009 Aliner Classic that will work for us, but being camper rookies we aren't sure if we should buy something used. It's in fabulous shape, but has basically been sitting unused for 4 years. What should we plan on replacing, based on the age of the camper? Tires?

Welcome to the portal and congrats on the acquisition of your N2U (New To You) Aliner!

Yeah, look at the date code on the sidewalls of the tires. If they're older than 5 years, worn out or cracking badly, you might want to replace them.

How to read tire date codes: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=11

I'd repack or replace the wheel bearings and grease seals and do this at least once every season or every 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. Inspect and adjust the brakes (if so equipped).

Sanitize the fresh water tank and plumbing. Particulates and dissolved minerals coupled with spring pressure in the valve can cause the city water valve seal to become sealed in the closed position. Connect a pressure regulator and city water supply hose to the city water inlet, pressurize the system and try the sink to make sure the city water valve isn't stuck shut. If it is, remove the hose and press the ends of a needle nosed pliers into the city water inlet and carefully push until the seal releases.

If the camper is equipped with a flooded cell deep cycle battery, check the electrolyte levels and put it on a deep cycle battery charger. If it's an AGM or Gel Cell deep cycle battery, put it on a deep cycle charger.

Thanks. We were thinking we would need to do those things. Especially the tires. They look good on the outside, but would hate for them to fail. We haven't made the purchase yet, but need to know how much more we will spend before making a final offer.

Welcome! On a pup I think used is always the way to go. There just aren't enough things and systems on a pup to wear out to the point where it becomes cost-prohibitive to fix. Plus the premium on a new pup is extremely high.

First thing I would replace are the tires. ($100 or less per tire). Take it for a good long drive. Make sure the brakes work and check the hubs for excess heat (Excess heat = hub is too hot to touch). If they are too hot then you should get the wheel bearing inspected and replaced (Less than $200 if you don't do it yourself).
