    Hi, all!

My husband and I just bought our first pop-up. I’m hoping to pull our two teen boys away from screens this summer without too much kicking and screaming. I’m also hoping to hitch it up and take it out on my own with the boys and a girl’s weekend or two.

Welcome from Dukes Fl. Give the boys a task to do and that will give them something to keep them out of trouble :) Good Luck and happy camping

Hello and Welcome from central PA!
Want your boys to buy into it, ask them where they'd like to go or what area is of interest to them. We left our girls influence our destinations most of the time and they still as adults love to go camping. Even the 1 son-in-law has looked at campers so they could join us and continue making memories!

Thanks. I did ask them to think about where they would like to go...They looked at me with blank stares.... Oi! How times have changed.

Looking at Illinois, I see a few state parks in Oglesby, IL. There the boys can be boys, walking trails and playing in the water by the water falls. I was also going to suggest Kankakee River State Park but I hit their site quick and it's closed for 2020. Rivers and lakes are usually great for boys to run and play. If they fish or hunt, there you go. If your family canoes/kayaks waterways are wonderful. If not, maybe find a place where you guys can rent and try it out. My wife and I rented a canoe a few years back (first for me) from a livery and we loved it. Nice slow ride down the river and at the end just dragged it to shore at the livery and we were done. We (us and our adult kids) have river tubes and every year we go find a river, leave one vehicle at the bottom of the river and pile into the other (like a clown car), drive up river and get in. A few hours down river we stop and have lunch on a rock/boulder/shore line, then finish the float down to the first car (with our trash in a bag - always leave it cleaner than you found it!).
Throw a few crazy ideas at them, make them think outside the box. Maybe something that your family wouldn't normally do to get the gears in their heads turning.

Thanks so much for these ideas!! You are totally speaking my language. I live in the far Chicago suburbs now, but I grew up camping in the Mountains, rivers and lakes of Washington State. Getting my family to have this type of vision has been a L O N G journey.
