I had a propane tank to regulator hose fail after less that two years. I would like to replace it with a high quality part. Shopping on-line, they all look the same except for the hoses wrapped in stainless steel fiber. I don't recognize the bands of the stainless steel hoses.

Is there a best propane tank to regulator hose ?

We have the stainless braided hoses on our TT for two reasons. One is to have a bit more UV protection, another is to protect against easy rodent gnawing in some places. The first set of standard, bare, hoses lasted a year on our TT, although the ones on our popups lasted for years.
We're on the second set of braid-covered ones. The first set had two issues, at the same time, after about 3 or 4 years. One side had a leak at the metal collar, the other was clogged.
We bought our braided ones at our dealer (3 miles away, very helpful and handy). We did have to buy a little adapter to connect properly, but I don't remember just why, maybe something to do with the auto-changeover we have, maybe somehting else. Whatever the reasons, they've worked well for us.

When I swapped regulators for an auto change over I bought the (rubber) pigtails at the local propane distributor, where I get the tanks refilled. They've been on the pup at least 7 years with no problems.

Another option is to search for known brand names, such as Marshall Excelsior or Flame King.

I followed the link to the Marshall pigtail on Amazon and the country of origin is listed as China unless I have made a mistake. The Amazon site also says "1/4" Inv. Flare and 1/4" Mpt connection offered." I don't know if that means there is an adapting fitting with the pigtail. The leaking pigtail was inverse flare.

My auto change regulator is from Marshall and their customer service helped me out when I was installing it. I'll give them a call to see if the pigtail is really from China and what is going on with the offer of two types of connections.

I called Marshall this morning and asked about the pigtail sold by Amazon and included in the link supplied by SteveP.

The Amazon page says made in China. According to the Marshall representative, this is false and theseus is correct. The hose is made in the USA.

According to the rep, this particular hose only comes with the inverted flare fitting. Other Marshall hoses may come with pipe thread. The hose will have a one year warranty, an in some cases a five year warranty, but must be bought from a retailer that gets the product from a Marshall distributor.

The hose has an excess flow protection valve that may help if there is a break somewhere in the propane system. This would justify the higher cost, in my opinion.

Thank you to everyone for the help.

One feature of ACME propane connections is excess flow protection. The little ball moves with excess flow and limits flow! It can activate just by turning open the cylinder valve but should reset when the gas lines are full,

Other safety feature, the plastic melts and the cylinder's spring loaded valve ejects this stopping all flow.

Am I correct in assuming some propane hoses do not have excess flow protection? Some on-line ads don't mention having an ACME nut or having excess flow protection.

The ACME nut is easily recognizable, see illustrations above, and would be expected to have excess flow protection. I have seen a couple of the old style POL connection that claim to have excess flow protection, but I would not expect it unless it is specifically stated. But there is a lot of junk online and I often see reviews stating that it is not what was expected. The best protection is to buy from a known or recommended source.
