If you are a child and dont eat what is good for you I don't want to have to sort thru your "I hate liver bullsht."

I dont like the taste of beef liver. How do I make it more palatable? I am down to eating it rare, searing it about a minute on each side.

Thanks

As kids in a family of six, we were fed beef liver. My dad was the liver lover in our family and he loved it until the day he died. Mom would serve it fried, well done and smothered in onions. She would on occasion throw in some bacon during the frying.

My siblings and I always complained and said that we hated it, but we always ate it. Even though I always said that I hated it too, I did kind of like it. Although I don't eat it as an adult and would not go out of my way to get a meal of it like my father, I certainly wouldn't turn down a meal of liver.

And on Thanksgiving, I will fight you for the turkey liver and heart every time! You can have the gizzard.[LOL]

I dated a guy once that LOVED liver & onions. I would bread it with a mix of flour, salt & pepper and fry it with sliced onions. Then make gravy. What a nice girlfriend I was; even with the fan on, I had to leave the kitchen for fresh air every few minutes. I can't even stand the smell. Not a very healthy way to cook, but he thought it was fabulous. This would be a lot of work, though, if you are camping.

My question is, why would you want recipes for something that you don't like the taste of? Heck, just take an iron supplement, wash it down with a sip of beer, then finish the beer while eating a messy, greasy cheeseburger. With bacon. [:)O]:)[HB]

I wonder if you can make dirty rice with beef liver instead of chicken. Might be worth trying.

We used to cook liver in a frying pan and then cut it up in little pieces to use as an enticement for the dogs while doing confirmation.

Never ate it myself - not once - never.

DW and I have studied nutrition for 4 years. Beef liver is a superfood. It is one of the most nutritious foods available. It is full of minerals, etc you can't get much of elsewhere. It's not about iron.

Thanks for the replies.

Im with you, best way to cook it is, dont. Few things i don't eat, liver is one, tripe is another. I dont feel bad, I eat plenty of other animals to make up for it.

Breaded, Fried, then Smothered in onions. That’s pretty much the only way we eat it; but we do like it. You might want to try slicing it, then soaking it in saltwater, then in buttermilk before breading it. They say that can mellow out the sharpness that liver can have. Whether it does, or it’s just my confirmation bias, or I’m just hungry, I’m not sure. But it is good....if you like liver.

Superfood, huh? That’s a shame. Now the price will go up. I didn’t like it when I was a kid, but we ate it regularly because it was cheap. Now I like it, but we don’t do much fried food. When my friend and I buy a steer, I get all of the liver because he doesn’t like it.

Thank you I will try soaking it.

don’t do much fried food.

In 1947 Proctor and Gamble gave the nearly bankrupt American Heart Assoc 17 million ( current dollars) in exchange for an endorsement of the industrial Machine Oil commonly called Vegetable oil. Increasing numbers of cardiologist think it is a leading cause of heart disease.

make meatloadlf

Do you know how meatloaf was originated? During the War between the States beef was so rare when it started going rancid they would grind it up and heavily spice it. I think it started in NY.

I did a search for beef liver recipes

Thank you for your time and effort.

best way to cook it is, dont.

I put Diesel oil in a truck that takes it.
I put regular gas in my SUV.
I put high octane in DW's mid life crisis because it is high compression.
I put non alcohol gas in my "prehistoric" garden tools and engines.
You provide the proper fuel for your different equipment. Therefore I eat liver.

The Inuit Indians , AKA Eskimos, Eat animal organs and give the dogs the muscle meat. Lions eat the organs and leave the muscle to the scavengers. Early humans would smash the skull of an animal kill and eat the brains. Organ meat is good nutrition. Meanwhile your self inflicting yourself with wheat and sugar.

Your thinking of scrpple, and its a Pennsylvania thing. They ground up what was left of the pig and added corn meal and spices. ( its good and made with less scraps now, lol).
As for eating what our ancestors ate, I'm evolved. There were cannibals also, but im not lining up to eat people. There is a million other things i rather have then liver. Ill leave you in the eternal words of my 5 yo when she wanted me to make her meatballs and spaghetti one day.
Me, you wanted me to make then, i made sause and freash meetballs, it took 3 hours. Just try them
Her, no
Me , but there the best meatballs ive ever made, you'll never get food this good again.
Her , if you like them so much, you eat them.
Me , outsmarted by a 5 yo again.....

The good and bad of food isn't as simple as eating or not eating any particular food(s). Too much liver can cause hypervitaminosis A - something they believe has occurred since early man. Just because it's "good" doesn't mean it should be eaten all the time. Making sure you don't over take vitamins and minerals is important - whether it's through your foods or supplements.

Vegetable oil causes heart problems. Well yeah, if you use it every day for every meal. And if you do, then you are eating a lot of fried foods. Which means you are likely using a lot of salt, eating more meat than fruits and veggies, and not balancing out your food intake.

There is no "super food". There is no one food that is so good you should eat it to exclusion of other foods.

I love liver!! However it was not beef liver but calves liver (though she did tell me once about soaking beef liver in milk to mellow it). Mom would cook a pound of bacon and drain the pan of bacon grease. She would flour the liver and cook it in the pan she cooked the bacon in. I don't eat much liver anymore since no one in my house enjoys it like I do. I just might go to the German meat market and pick up a piece for myself because now I have a hankering for it!! Hope you find a way to cook it that you like!! Enjoy!

Not just early humans. We ate a fair amount of calf and pork brains growing up (usually scrambled with eggs) as well as squirrel brains. Once I graduated to a .22, squirrel brains were rarer. But, after the variants of CWD started showing up, I left the brains behind.

Is scrapple the same thing that we in the south call “hogs head cheese”?

Head chese is diffrent, at least from what i remember, lunch meat. So diffrent meats set in gelatin that you can slice. I havent seen that around in 30 years, lol. Scrapple is ground up and has the added corn meal them made into a small loaf, you slice off a square and fry it up on both sides for breakfast. It gets a hard crust outside and is like squishy inside. Kind of like a sassage but with a diffrent texture.
