Maybe it is my Mac OSX Sierra 10.12.6. It is the same for Chrome and Firefox (I uses FF).
The top part says 'Link' but is not clickable to enter a short name/ description to dispaly in place of the long link. What am I missing?
    Big thanks

Hilite the word or phrase with your cursor, as if to do a copy/paste, enter the url into the link window and click "insert."

Highlight the word you want to be the link, then click the link button.

Here is my test from an iPad w/Safari browser.

I love this site. We hope to plan a trip to Grand Canyon (hopefully linked to by ‘this’. ;)
    1) I first highlighted ‘this’, it took me a few tries of going to a different tab to then secondarily highlight, copy a url, then back to this tab, click ‘link’ icon and paste the url. Hopefully it would work more readily from my desktop Mac.

EDIT: It worked. But as stated, took a few tries via touch screen limited iPad.

Here is my test from my Mac Desktop (OSX 10.12 Sierra) w/Firefox browser.

Here is a link to DIY Sound Barriers for a generator at the campsite.
Using a mouse vs. touchscreen on the iPad seemed to work well:
    1) I opened a new browser window (I assume new tab would work too). Went to the site/URL I wanted to make the link for.
    2) Went back to the original browser window and the page with my already typed out text. I highlighted the words 'DIY Sound Barrier'.
    3) I went back to the other browser window and copied the URL.
    4) Clicked 'back' into the original window w/ my post that made that window the active one. The 'words' were still highlighted.
    5) Then I clicked on the 'Link' icon, pasted the URL there. Clicked done/OK.
    6) 'Words' were bold dark gray. Looks like it worked. (let's see... spoiler, it did ;) )

    EDIT: Yeserie Bob. It worked!

It does take a few steps, but I appreciate being able to make my posts more reader friendly.... -AND- I am a big advocate for links. (Too much information... is well, never too much. ;) )
