Yes they are water proof, get the high wind.
But I would fix the canvas. I use caughlan's canvas tent repair kit. I have used it before. One fix, covering a 2 by 1 inch hole lasted for 12 years and was still hold when I go rid of the tent. The trick is when you glue the canvas patch is to clamp it between boards. For one patch I use two boards and some bricks.
