Hunting Island SP is on a barrier island about 20 miles east of Beaufort SC.

Just got back from a 4 night stay. This is a beautiful park. If you want true beach side camping, this is the place. I have camped in all 4 SC ocean front state parks and this is the closest you get to the beach. 200 sites but only about 10-12 RV sites are truly beach front. About another 15 tent only sites on the beach.

Monday was my birthday (don't ask but I don't feel but a few days over 69), my DW took me to a place on St Helena island (Boondocks) for all you can eat Snow Crab. It was great. There is an old light house on Hunting Island that you can climb for a great view. Surf fishing and pier fishing are available. We mostly swam and chilled at the beach. Very relaxing week.

The downer. The day we arrived (Sunday) 3 people had drowned at the park; father, 16 year old son and 17 year old cousin. They just found the third body yesterday.

How are the bathrooms? Which sites are the best sites to get? Which sites should we definitely not get?

Baths could have been better but I have seen a lot worse. Look at the online map. On beach or as close as possible is best.

Hunting Island is a fam favorite for us. Were lucky right now that we live about 2 hours from it. Campsites are all pretty level (except a few), some good beach time (watch the current), fishing, shell collecting. We've had many campsites all over this place and all of them have been great with the exception of one where people liked to cut through it, but still was fine. Facilities were good, this is a busy campground so they get used hard (almost always full). Being busy you can't plan at the last minute to go here. I'll take pictures for the time we go to post.

The racoons are numerous and persistent.

This is one of my favorite campgrounds. So sad about the drownings though. Wonder if that is due to all the storms/rain we have had this year?

A friend just posted pictures of this place in Facebook.
It looks gorgeous. Maybe if I start now, I can get a beach
site for next year. Guess everyone thinks it's gorgeous
too. I was looking to maybe go early fall where it's
still warm enough for my little one to play in the
sand and splash in the waves but not unbearable
heat but no beach front sites available til mid Nov.
I may look for a tent site just to hang out there and
achieve my goal of having a campfire right on the beach
and then get a site for the pup wherever. Or I could just go
    back to roughing it.

The jungle scenes in Forest Gump were filmed there. We are going in OctoberÂ… nice time of year. not too cold/not too hot.

We have camped here twice: once in a tent and the other in the pup for Thanksgiving. This is my one of my favorite parks!

Hunting island is great , but the bugs , sand gnats will eat you alive . Parris island , where they train Marines is not far away and you soon learn why they chose here to train the marines . if they can put up with the bugs , heat , and humidity , so can you just suck it up , don't whine , drop and give me 20 , and have fun DO YOU HEAR ME?

I've only been there in March and December. A little too cold for swimming but I don't mind wearing jeans and a hooded sweatshirt on the beach. At least I'm at the beach! :) No big crowds and minimal bugs!

In speaking with one of the park staff there earlier this year, I believe he said they "Relocated" 40+ raccoons last Winter.

I've got reservations there again for next year - Can't Wait!

I was there march (or was it april) and in September this year and only saw one raccoon, at night and around the trashcans. Love the place. We generally have vacations around april but this year it seems the family vacations will be on early january so this park is in the options....
