Backbone is located in Northeast Iowa. There are two campgrounds - one primitive and one modern. We always stay at the modern. There are two shower and restroom facilities there. The campground is paved, so it makes it nice for the kids to ride their bikes. There is also a nice playground. The area is heavily wooded, so shade is never a problem. Within the last several years, they have added more electrical sites. There are NO water hookups but there are faucets located throughout the campsite to fill. There is also a dump station.

The beach is between 3/4's and a mile away from the campground. They have paddleboats, canoes and bike-boats to rent and another playground. The beach is free access (no lifeguards) and is swimmable. Only downside - the last several years they have closed it several times due to high bacteria.

There are of course MANY trails to hike! You can also go to the other side of the park where there are picnic areas, another playground, trout streams, a museum, and many other things to do.

It is a very peaceful campground with all the modern amenties.

Nice park. We camped there last August. We didn't go swimming as it looked like the geese had taken over the beach. Too Bad. Walked the trail on Backbone. Went into Strawberry Pt. and ate at the hotel. That was nice too. Drove north for the day to Elkader?. Big antique mall in old hotel. Good Bakery too! I would go back.

I love Backbone! The last couple of rows in the "modern" campground are primitive sites which are great for pop-ups. The kayaking on the lake and up the Maquoketa River is great.

You've got to stop at the drugstore in Strawberry Point and have an old-fashioned fountain coke!
