ICE CASTLE / YETTI styles are all over the midwest. Ice Castle even builds a 5th wheel tri axle version. I don't see much, if any at all, when I do my big trips. I'd like to hear from these folks as well - maybe they keep to their own fishin forums? The guys I have talked to said they do use them year round as well.

For someone who's winters do not get that hard freeze that some do, it just amazes me you guys can even haul something like that on ice and not fall in. Amazing though what one can do with an old popup but for something like that I wouldn't want to tow it at highway speeds.

I don't fish, but I think it's because we've done it all our lives, it's hard not to do it. Nothing says Dad-life like reminding your kids "we've driven on that lake, ya know..."

The DNR even gives us a few reminders annually. There is no safe ice, but it you see a bunch o' pickups out there, might as well take a drive out and see what's what. PS - I don't fish.

Most DIY ice shanties are very normal in a rural county. I've seen a lot of PUP converted to Ice Houses. I'll just keep remembering to dump them here. Those fancy houses are on Mille Lacs / Lake of the Woods / i.e. larger lakes where they build the ice fast for weight. I thought @BikeNFish might get a fishin box, but he didn't convert that far.

I made an portable shelter on a sled during my Yankee winter times. I wanted some mobility but appreciated a couple friends with shanties, heaters, benches, etc.

The first group shown (with the sled saw) are buddies of mine - cutting holes to raise money for a local youth group. I may have recognized a few others but not sure I would admit to it lol! Much like the gun deer season, the news anchors always find the best and brightest to interview

I’ve actually thought about doing that to one of the “free” camper I got this summer. I got it pre gutted, water damage did that work! Lol, I’ll either make it look a lot better or I’ll just scrap it though. The other “free” camper just had a broken lift cable and needs the side boards on the roof replaced. I’ll use that in the summer and if a hard aside works out, that’ll be the cold weather/hunting camper.

We used to ice fish, white bear lake, prior, and it was always the first trip of the year that would be the scariest, driving on ice =scary. I had a neighbor next door when I was a kid, he was out with friends on Mille Lacs , he was in a pickup with other friends, he's the only one that drowned, it was so sad, I think about that once in awhile.
My husband used to fish it with friends they'd stay overnight, and every time the ice cracked, loudly, they'd all come flying out of there!

I went through while walking. Dumb move on my part that was caused by too much experience. Short version the area where a bay connected to the main lake wasn't as solidly frozen as the bay and lake. My buddy even drilled a test hole when he saw some slushy areas, when he said it was six inches, I kept walking. What I should have stopped and thought was 12" to 14" in the bay going down to 6" what's happening up ahead? I also jumped on it a little bit to test how solid it felt. I know "here's your sign".

My snowmobile suit kept me floating then I rolled onto the ice and kept rolling for about 100 yards without slowing down.
