Been out of the popup world for a while... I still have a trailer on a campsite (permanent) but wanted an inexpensive popup to travel around with. Picked up a 2002 Starcraft Constellation Orion. It has sat (indoors) not used for the past 5 years. A few years ago, the PO let someone borrow it, and they closed it up wet and didn't tell him... He was not happy about it when he found it... I could see he was a bit OCD about his equipment, and this clearly bothered him. The canvas is original and has two (6" x 2ft) spots of mold / mildew that need to be cleaned. One is above one bunk and the other above the sink bump out (both are where the canvas attached to the roof). Mice left two small holes over one bunk and got to a few of the screens (about 4 spots, largest hole is the size of a baseball). It was advertised as the bottom box was perfect, but the canvas would need to be replaced. As I looked over the unit, they didn't lie... the box is in pristine condition, all the bedding and cushions are in great shape. It has a storage box on the front, with no water damage. I could not find any sign of water damage to the floors anywhere. The roof is perfect, and since its fiberglass, no rot. One zipper that connects a bed end to the side panel is broke. It was like that when the PO bought it. I think I can clean up / repair the canvas and use at is with minimal repair. I picked up this gem for $600... yes only $600.00 I have all the manuals and books

Yes it need things... The PO never used the water system, or the propane. I'll need to go though the water systems, sanitize the holding tank, check the water pump, and hot water tank. There's no gas bottle and no battery. Both east to correct, as I plan on installing two batteries, and I have an extra tank at the house. As far as the broken zipper I'm thinking I'll just hand stitch the two pieces together. The canvas needs a good general cleaning. Tire are good, as the camper has not been in the sun, and has been stored on jack stands with the tires off the pavement.

Now for my question. I need to clean the stained fabric, and patch the holes over the bed. What's everyone's recommendation as for a cleaning product, and a quality patching material for the bunk. Since the canvas is now 21 years old, I'd like to add some waterproofing to it as well. I know I can patch the screen without too much fuss.

Nice looking camper and a steal at $600!

If I recall correctly, Starcraft used a synthetic canvas like Fleetwood's Sunbrella. So any cleaner that you could use on Sunbrella material should be fine. I do not know if you will get everything perfect, but it will be cleaner. They have a product for treating the canvas too.

I would consider changing the tires out if they are over 5 or 6 years old. Even though they were not touching the ground, they still age. Just my opinion.

When I went to look at it, I wasn't expecting it to be so nice. So I just took some cash to make a deposit. I'll pick it up this weekend. Let the mods begin...

Thanks for the tip regarding the cleaner and protector. I'll look for something compatible with Sunbrella material.

Welcome back.

I don't remember the name, but DW bought a cleaner she read about online in the marine department at Bass Pro Shop. It worked well on the canvas on our Jayco Eagle.

I've been doing some research and it looks as though Bass Pro Stain Remover is the product to use to remove the stains. I'll be picking some up in the near future.

Went to pick up the popup Saturday and my son went along for the ride. After looking at the camper, he talked me into letting him buy it and I could “use” it whenever I wanted… He had a hybrid which he had to sell last year. After seeing the condition of this popup he was not going to let me buy it… he wanted it. He loved the hybrid, but feels this pup has twice the floor space. After setting up at his house he noticed the slide wasn’t fully extending. Needed to go out another foot before the rubber seals would meet. … after some trouble shooting, he found a small broom and dust pan under the slide, stopping it from fully deploying. Now that it’s fully opened, it really opened up the interior. I’ve attached pics as you can see the slide was still covering the furnace theromostst and electrical plugs. The second is with the slide fully opened.
I still can’t believe we got this camper as cheap as we did. It hadn’t moved in 5 years. We hooked onto it, all exterior lights worked… even the brakes worked. No I didn’t try any of the electrical, 12 volt, propane or water systems… if there’s an issue we’ll fix it. This unit not only came with a stove that can me mounted outside. It also has an RV grill still in the original plastic wrap. The bunk end lights / fans were also included, along with freshly washed privacy curtains and valances.. as well as all of the owners manuals and books…
The roof on this unit is not made from wood or aluminum. It’s a solid peice of fiberglass, similars to the hull of a boat, no seams to calk, just a solid gel coat roof. The roof vent had a crack from getting hit by hail so my son climbed onto the roof to put some tape on it until we can get a replacement. He’s 230 lbs, and the roof didn’t even flex. I mention this because we plan to add a/c and it doesnt have any a/c support rails even though StarCraft said it’s A/C ready. I was amazed as the roof did not flex, no noises, nothing. I checked thr thickness of the roof based on the vent… and it’s probably twice as thick than a std popup roof. Plus being fiberglass, no seams to caulk, and no rot. That’s a win, win, win…
Let’s just say my son is over the moon excited about his new tp him pup, come on camping season…
