After nearly catching the camper on fire I decided to replace the 1157 brake light bulbs with LEDs. The two on the interior work fine, but I can't seem to get the bulb on the outside light to work. If I stick it in the very end of the socket it will work, and any further it becomes very dim. The original bulb works fine in that same socket.

This does sound like polarity, or maybe an LED mismatch? Some sellers (particuarly at the lower end of the $$ range) will claim their bulb works for your application, but wont, or won't work without modification. This is particularly true with bulbs that are both brake light/tail light and turn signal. as there are different filaments in the incandescent for brake/TS vs taillight, the LED has to be able to do all 3.
