5000' is wayyy too high! low and slow for me in a Cub or Champ.
Love flying as well! I got my Private in 2006 and I have been an Air Traffic Controller since 2008.
i haven't been since 2015, but I'm heading up in 2 weeks for the 2018 show!
I was taking lessons, but the FAA keeps screwing with my medical. They keep saying they are not revoking, but cannot validate and are asking for more information.
Edit to add: At least I got to solo a few times.
I flew with a Special Issuance Medical for 20 years and finally went BasicMed. Keep sending them information and get your first S.I. and then go BasicMed! I'm at Oshkosh now, so heading to the show...
And congrats on the Solo!
I almost made it! Soloed, did my solo cross countries and was getting ready for my check ride. I felt that I needed a few more hours under the hood. Before I could, I was laid off at work and could not finish. The sad thing is, after about a year later I went back to the flight school, just to hang out and the owner ask me what happened. I told him and he said "Jonas you dumb a.., if you I told me when it happened I would have spotted you whatever time you needed. Live and learn!
Got my private in 1993, Graduated with a degree in Aviation in 1997, ran a FBO and flight school, did a stint as a ferry pilot for a brokerage Co. Then got into the corporate world. Left it all to become a firefighter and Paramedic. I did ride as a flight medic on a medical helicopter for 3 years before coming back to the ground. I love flying but honestly straight and level is beyond boring for me.
