Hi everyone! My name is David, and my wife and I just purchased a 1988 StarCraft Starmate SD pop up. Previous owner refurbished/reinforced a lot of the hard work on it (new tires, roof sealant, interior ceiling panels, new utility hatches and light lenses, and serviced heating/air conditioner unit). Canvas and interior are in excellent shape too! Popped it up last weekend to give it a look, and the setup went fine (although getting the door into place was a bit of a workout.....)

Unit is wired with a 15amp connection for lights/interior, a separate cord/plug for the air conditioning unit, and has city water hookup OR a 7 gallon tank under the sink compartment.

We have two young kids, age 3 and a 2 month old baby. So our camping will likely be on modern pads with electric/water hookups at state parks in Nebraska & Iowa, and probably no more than 2 nights in a row until we find a groove with this whole camping thing.

We're going to try some backyard camping this weekend to work out the kinks. Wish us luck on all of our adventures. Send us your best 'wish I had known....' tips and tricks that will help us have a great experience with all this!

    Welcome from Planet Georgia!

The door will go into place pretty easily if the trailer is level. I got a BAL leveler, which makes it really easy to dial in the side-to-side level. For my Starflyer, I found if I get it level, then raise the door side another inch, it's almost too easy.

I just found a used BAL leveler on craiglist, so look forward to having that in my PUP toolkit on the next trip!

Thanks everyone. We’ve had 2 weekend camping trips, and both have been with only minor hiccups. Here’s some review so far, so feel free to share tips/tricks if you can:

    1) backing up Takes many attempts.....argh! Also learned on the second trip not to attempt in the dark. We just unhooked it and pushed it into place LOL!

    2) our trailer Jack seems to be slipping slowly. One night we woke up and the camper was definitely tipped toward the front and the back stabilizers were off the ground. Even just one adult laying on that side makes it skip down....which I know shouldn’t be happening. Thoughts on replacing the Jack or how to avoid it falling/slipping during the night? Can I use those stackable blocks under the tongue in the meantime for more support?

    3) definitely need the BAL leveler to get the PUP square enough to raise the door.

    4) we’d like to use the on board water tank (7 gallon) - but have never used a campground filling hose/spout. Any tricks to filling that little spout on the side of the camper? Do I just aim the hose in there and fill until water starts coming back out?

We hope the weather cooperates for some camping into the fall. Our heater in the unit works good, so gives us hope for some fun fall camping next to a fire pit!

Congrats on your purchase! We also have littles so I’m glad to see we’re not crazy by wanting to buy a 1980’s pop up! Look forward to your future posts!
