We're looking to buy a pop up camper that will fit our family of five with two teen boys and one well on the way to teenhood (9yo).

Neither DH or I grew up camping, but I have always had a love of the great outdoors. I grew up going to parks, exploring the woods, etc. DH, it seems, grew up very climate controlled, LOL.

I think that I got just enough of a fix going to parks and hiking quite a bit when the boys were younger, but now that they are all older and in school and I am working full time, I find that my weekends are filled with laundry and groceries and I'm not happy.

Our first inspiration for this new journey in our lives was that two of my three boys (I'm working on the third) have inherited my love of outdoor exploration and have expressed the desire to go camping. The second was that my recently retired parents have purchased an RV and have taken to travelling 6-8 months every year. I was jealous enough listening to their stories and seeing the photos they sent, but I went over the edge recently when I spent a week with them on the west coast. I'm in. I want to go, see, and most of all, DO.

DH was not on board with tent camping, but I think I have him sold on the idea of a pop up. We already have a minivan, will just need to get a tow package installed, and then we are looking for a preferably used pop up that sleeps 6 with A/C-heat, a stove and fridge, maybe a microwave. I'm not sold on the shoilet thing, but I'm keeping an open mind. There are so many options out there right now that I'm completely overwhelmed. We'd like to keep it under $10K (and preferably closer to $5K) and I'm figuring we'll buy used.

Any and all advice is welcome! Thanks!

Welcome from west central Illinois! We too get envious when we hear stories from others who get to be gone months at a time. Maybe someday when my job stops interfering with my free time! Best of luck with your search.

    Welcome. We live in apex.

Finding used around 5k shouldn't be a problem. We bought new for <8.
We also pull with a honda minivan.

If you have not camped much, you may want to rent one and give it a try.

Welcome from the great Pacific Northwest.

Be sure to learn your minivan's towing and tongue weight limits as well as its gross combined vehicle weight restriction. When shopping for a PUP compare the trailer's gross weight to these numbers to be sure you can safely tow it.

Ahh, I only spent a week in the PNW, and I was ready to move! We were in Oregon at Pacific City, and my middle son stayed with my parents and is currently in Port Angeles, WA with a trip to Mt. St. Helens next. He will come back east next week after landing in Boise.

Yes, I have learned quite a bit lately about weights and TVs lately. We're keeping an eye on it, our Honda is rated for 3500, and we're hoping to stay well under it.

Welcome to the Portal from the RDU area. A couple years ago, we watched the listings and found our PUP for <5K, and close by in Apex. With Falls Lake and Jordan Lake nearby, you will have some excellent nearby "escapes". Good luck on your search. Happy Trails!
