My name is Andrew and my family (wife and two kids - 11 and 9) live in Arnprior (near Ottawa), Ontario. I'm from New Zealand and wife from Canada. We recently brought a 2007 Jayco Series 1007 early spring and we are currently impatiently waiting for my school holidays to start so we can go to a family reunion in Grand Rapids, Minnesota than a trip around Lake Superior, back through Ontario. If anybody has some good places to see or stay I am up for any suggestions and advice.

We have done the Superior route 4X in the last 2 years. Stayed at Sandbar PP just north of Ignace 3x, really like that park. If you are going the Superior shore route, Chutes PP is also a good option, between The Sault and Sudbury. We were just at Kettle Lakes near Timmons. Older campground but not bad.

    Hello and welcome from Minnesota!

Are you taking the south shore or north shore route back to Ottawa?

I'm headed up the North Shore on Thursday on my way to a Canada fishing trip. If you've never been to the North Shore before, you are in for a huge treat. It is, by far, my favorite place in Minnesota. I have taken the drive dozens of times in my life. There are many camping areas, but most, if not all, need reservations.

HERE is a website that has many of the attractions of the North Shore, but the drive itself is the main attraction. There are eight State Parks. HERE is State Park info. The Grand Portage State Park has no camping, but it is the only FREE (no park pass needed) state park in Minnesota and has hiking paths and waterfalls to visit.

Before you cross the border, stop at Ryden's Border Store less than a half mile from the border. It's a tourist trap for sure, but they have a money exchange with good exchange rates and the last of the low gas prices before you head into Canada.

After crossing the border on my way to my fishing destination, we go through Kakabeka Falls to buy bait. It is thirty minutes west of Thunder Bay. It's a small town but Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park is also a good place to spend an afternoon with the falls and hiking paths on both sides of the river. I normally pass through Kakabeka Falls, but last August, the DW and I camped near Grand Portage and we took a day trip to Kakabeka Falls and really enjoyed it.

I have never been past Thunder Bay so that's all I have, but I've heard there is a magnificent scenic overlook there. I just may go there this next August when we camp there again.

I hope this helps and Good luck with your trip.

This is great information and thanks for the tidbits of information. If you have a chance I have been told that Sleeping Giant Provincial park just out of Thunder Bay is worth staying at. I plan to stay there for a night as we drive through.
