I camped at Cheesequake SP in Matawan this past weekend. I chose this SP beause there was a wedding I was attending near by and I decided to make a camping weekend of it rather than staying at a hotel.

There are only 53 sites, but each one is huge. Some sites are more secluded than others (they're set back a bit rather than right on the access road). I was in site 44, which was nice. I think the best (most secluded) site is #45, which was the one next to me. If I ever stay there again, that'll be the one that I want.

The staff and ranger were very nice and accommodating, not worried about me getting in after they left on Friday night. They just told me to come check in when I have a moment the next morning. On Saturday morning the ranger stopped by to make sure everything was okay when I came in and if there was excessive noise. He said to wait until I had my coffee before going to the office as he knows how important it is!

They did have clean bathrooms with free hot showers, and a small playground right next to the bathrooms.

The downside to the SP is that it is right on the edge of a residential neighborhood (I could see the main road from my site through the trees) and it was really close to the Garden State Parkway. You could hear the passing traffic from the campground and on the hiking trails.

There were several trails, but unfortunately I only got to do one hike, which was nice. I caught a white tail deer checking me out from about 20 feet away.

It was $20/night with a 2 night minimum (unless you call the morning you want to camp, then they'll allow you to reserve for one night). It was perfect for what I needed, but I don't know if I would make it a destination spot, mainly for the traffic noise. A radio with some music (not blaring) did take care of that, though.

So if you're passing through and need a place to stay right off exit 120 of the GSP, go for it.

The man speaks! How's it going Don? It sounds like a good time, there are a lot of CGs where you can hear traffic in the distance, stinks when that happens.. but as you said, radio does wonders or just ignoring it!

Have any pics from the trip?

    Hey Kevin!

I did get some pictures with my cell phone, I'll put those up a little later.

The sites were huge and had a decent buffer, so it was perfect to drown out the traffic without the music carrying over to the next site.

Got great use out of my tripod grill too. Man, I love that thing!
