Pantry food and packing

What do you all do with your pantry food when packing for a trip? I had a great folding box with handles that I got from a grocery store years ago. Sadly they don't seem to sell it anymore and mine is a little worse for wear now. Looking to replace it with something hopefully as nice but preferably more durable. Folding is preferred as I don't have storage at my house.

DW co-opted a plastic milk crate years ago for our camping "pantry"...invision those crates that can be found for hanging file-folders, only longer.

its packed for each camping season and , as non-perishables get cycled out, it's replenished and kept in the basement until next trip.

we've never had room for a "formal" pantry in the PUPs so, all the stores are kept in the crate and in the TV during each outing... works for us because we've never cooked inside.

Happy Trails!

Depending on how much or how big my sundries are, I use a Sterilite tub and/or an old Coleman plastic cooler. Nice thing is they have lids that lock down well enough that I can leave them out and wind and rain doesn’t get in.
@Arruba ...

oooo... I like that!!... never thought of that option

we've certainly have an extra cooler that would work... just might change horses for this season

just goes to show you that you CAN teach an old dog new tricks

I'm gonna run it by "The Queen" for her approval

Happy Trails!

When I had the pop up I went with the milk crate. After we set up the pop up the food and stuff went from the milk crate to the floating wire shelve mode over the sink and the milk crate went outside under the pup so it was out of the way. Now with the TT , I use the foldable milk crates for clothing, etc. We have regular cabinets for the food now.

With popup, used one of those Rubbermaid totes, it could hold enough for a 3 day weekend, now with the TT, the sliding pantry drawers get loaded at the start of the season and replenished as required.

So would bears smell the canned or whatever you put inside of it? I love the idea but my husband worries bears can even smell canned goods. We camp in the boundary waters area so could be bears around.

Bears can’t smell food inside a can. However they can smell you and basically what you ate for breakfast. Not much you can do about that.

We have some Sterilite totes with gaskets, in a variety of sizes, to reduce the chance of things like moisture & bugs getting inside.

Likely isn’t going to keep bears from smelling food does make it easy to stash food in the bear box if your campsite has one. Label the totes if the bear box is shared by several sites.

Custom-built pantry is built in to our Aliner. We ferry goods in and out in whatever is handy. We are taking less food with us now becasue we do live in USA, and we have about 200 nights of camping experience. There are usually grocery stores around somewhere. We do stock up a bit if we are going to be boondocking. The only thing we take for sure in quantity are dehydrated hash browns, and even those we took less of on the last trip. And 4% ABV beer.

Lol. Yes, just was trying to figure out if it was like the store bought ones, or some get the hiking/ emergency food stuff. That comes in large bags.

Costco had some last year or the year before, and never since. I need dehydrated hash browns!

I wonder how well they'd turn out using a home dehydrator? I may have have to try it. There is this guy that dehydrates loads of foods, backpacker chef, or something like that.

We used older Classy Coleman Coolers for dry storage. We had two of those and another red cooler. Our cooking activities are always outside in the Mess Tent. Once moving to the TT we did away with food in those coolers, now they keep cheapo outside lights, towels, dog toys and tie outs.
Our Mess Tent Rig fits in the blue bins in the background here: https://www.popupportal.com/threads/diy-cook-surface-leveler.130857/
