We stayed at Pine Lake State Park last weekend (Apr 2016). This was the first trip we have been out this year (planned around when the parks would open their shower houses). I was surprised how many campers had rolled in by Friday evening. Not too many sites were reserved, but of course the one that looked best for us, #93, with some protection from the South wind was already taken. We ended up at #101 on the end by the lake and paved multi-use trail. This site had a large grassy area, then a berm...so not right next to anyone on the door side. We had easy access to several fishing spots, and the kids spent quite a bit of time on their bikes and scooters. We were fairly close to the shower house as well. The bathrooms were fine; reasonably clean, but could have used an overall power-wash after the winter. Showers are the type where you have to pull a cord to have flow. I think the majority of the sites were electric only, no water or sewer. One drawback for us was that the playground is not in the campground, so you can't send your kids to play and be able to watch them from your site. There is a shortcut over to the park next to #88 which looked like it would be a fairly good sized site for a PUP too, but is near the dumpsters.
There are lots of fishing spots on both lakes and the creek between them, the paved trail that you can take into the small town of Eldora, a beach (not sure about water quality), and you can hike all the way around the lower lake, part way around the upper lake, and there is a trail along the Iowa River that we didn't make it to.
We enjoyed the weekend, caught a few small bass and bluegill, and identified lots of spring wildflowers. Surprisingly the only wildlife we saw were squirrels, geese, and butterflies; but we are fairly loud hikers =).
You can see more pictures and read a bit more about the park on my blog.
