For 2017 I would like to travel from Chicago around Lake Mighigan. I have up to 10 days to do this and would like to have 3 stops. Door County, near Mackinac Island and Ludington.
I would appreciate any advice on campgrounds, must see etc.

I prefer a private site with a water view. Up to now I have only camped state parks but I am open to private ones as well.

My activities include bike riding, hiking, and kayaking.

Please help me plan this :)

    Thanks

Near Mackinac island, look into Straits State Park in St Ignace. They have some waterfront sites there. If you are interested, book as early as possible. Mackinaw Mill campground in Mackinaw city has lots of waterview sites, but you'll be packed in like sardines. There is a state park in Ludington too, but the waterview sites they have overlook Hamlin lake, not Lake Michigan.

I found that the Michigan state parks are pretty nice. In fact they were nicer than the two private parks I stayed at. Don't forget the Tahquamenon Falls in the UP.

And a door county fish boil is a must do. Add to the list the Pictured Rocks https://www.nps.gov/piro/index.htm

Sounds like fun. This is sort of a bucket list trip for me. I'd consider the Lake Express ferry to lop off the bottom of the loop and say I did it once in my life. Chicago and Gary are nothing worth seeing again while towing an RV.

You could spend the whole trip in just Door Co. I'd recommend Peninsula SP, but June (at least electric sites) will likely be full since the CG books out a year in advance. Potawatomi SP would be a good 2nd choice. Newport SP has very limited camping. Whitefish Dunes SP doesn't have sites. While you're up there, you can find anything you want to do. People especially like Whitefish Dunes and Peninsula for hiking/biking trails and kayaking. There are quaint towns with kitschy shops like Egg Harbor, Sister Bay, Ephraim and Ellison Bay. You can hit Door Co Brewing Company or any of the several wineries up there for a drink. And, if you're into this sort of stuff, plenty of mini golf, go-karting and petting zoos. If you don't want to cook, there are all sorts of cafes and non-chain restaurants everywhere.

It's a great place to visit in the summer time for couples, families, solo travelers, everyone. Great for RVing and motorcycling. Unfortunately, it gets really crowded, but these are some of the many reasons it is so popular.

While it the ferry is an experience in itself, the price can skyrocket when you add in the cost of tickets for You, the spouse, a couple of kids, a TV and a pup. You're looking at upwards of $500.

Oh totally. I was surprised when I heard pricing was for people and vehicles separately. Who rides this thing without needing to drive somewhere at the other end???? Sounds like gauging to me.

Have you done it? Is it fun or interesting? See I'm not sure if it's worth that much. It may be a once-in-a-lifetime thing for me more for the novelty than for the need... not that it's so much fun, but just to say I did it... which is a really dumb reason... haha! [:D]

I took the kids across Lake Michigan on the SS Badger, which runs from Ludington to Manitowoc and is marginally cheaper than the Lake Express (with an emphasis on 'marginally'). It was the first time that the kids had ever been out of sight of land, so that was pretty cool for them. It was a four hour trip, so there was time to play cards, and they showed a family friendly movie to keep them busy. We didn't have a trailer with us, so the price was around $200 I think. We only went one way, and came back through the UP. I might consider doing it again with the grandkids if the opportunity presents itself.

Wow....you rock and I'm jealous for sure now. I haven't been up there in years but as I remember it was definitely "thee" place to camp in Door County. Congrats on getting a campsite. I wish I could plan that far out.
