    Hello-
i plugged my N2M 99 starcraft (which needs lots of work) into my house with the proper dog boney thing. My lights worked. If I understand this correctly, that would mean my converter is working...correct? It converts ac to 12v dc, regardless if a battery is hooked up??

I have the old battery but the inline fuse was pulled, so no battery was hooked up.

    Thanks

    mark

If you got 12 Volt lights to light with no battery hooked up then the converter is working.

You are correct, your convertor is supplying 12 volt power. And as long as you don't have a switch on your convertor that's says CONV-OFF-BATT your convertor should charge your battery. Just an added note, don't leave a discharged battery out in freezing weather ....it will freeze and be junk. Usually the covers for the battery cells can come off ..... if yours do add distilled water until the plates inside are covered and get it charged and then tested. It may still be good, if you save it now.

That is correct. However having a connected battery is a good idea as it loads the circuit down real nice... Also the battery is part of a required DOT Safety feature where a break away cable is used to lock down the trailer brakes if it becomes disconnected while being towed. This requirement is a DOT SAFETY feature. It is an Inspection item here in my State of Virginia...

Here is a block diagram for a typical well organized 30A Trailer Inverter setup... Shows how the 120VAC and 12VDC circuits are connected around those two distribution panels...

thanks. Baby steps for me here. But I am stumped as wether or not the shore power will charge my battery while plugged in. I’ll get there. I need to be rebuilding the roof.

Check your battery voltage. Then plug the camper in. If the voltage goes up, the converter is charging the battery.

It likely will. There is a special circuit on the 12V side that is intended to connect to the battery and will charge the battery if it is connected. On newer converters, the voltage for the charge will actually vary on that circuit depending upon the mode of charging (how depleted the battery is).

It’s probably been sitting for 8-10 years.

A 99 model year most likely won't charge the battery while plugged into shore power.. snap a picture of the converter and post it, or post the make and model of it ..

The battery is 8 to 10 years old?

We'll now see how old you are

You can take the battery to any chain auto parts store to see if it's good. Just remember to disconnect it when you're not using it, because the converter and CO detector both continuously run when a battery is connected.

And @Econ has reminded me just how old I am…

Repeated before on these forums but incorrect - the only time the converter draws power is when it's plugged into 120 vac shore power, when it's not it's effectively out of the system, is not drawing any power at all, and doesn't affect draw down on the battery.

Quoting from the Starcraft manual, page 24:

It might be incorrect, but the source is authoritative.

Figures - crappy Centurion converter. [:(O] Good thing the manufacturer went out of business. :p That said, every trailer should be wired with a battery disconnect switch which in every case would prevent parasitic draw down of the battery regardless of what's causing it. :D

Didn't listen to them then. Sure can't listen to them now.
