For longevity in large numbers, Coleman <1989 is still in 4th place ahead of most of the newer models. But, what I am impressed with is Jayco / Starcraft. I did have much experience with them AND did not see them in the % we are seeing here. What I have heard is they have a good quality reputation.

The very old models, tend to have more to do w the care the owners took AND the level of skill of new owners as they aged.

had to bring it to your attention. Your not alone out here!! :)

part of the reason for this poll is to get an idea of who it out there, is brand reputation following what the PUP population is, generating NEW discussions, alternative promotion from owners on next acquisition than from manufacturers.

I don't think there are too many dealers around for this brand....at least not up this way. Also, from what I have seen in the literature the outside color is black and silver. Yuck! Not appealing to my eye anyway. [:(O]

From what I've seen, Somersets are not cheap, either. At those prices there are a lot of other camping options.

I think the fact that they are significantly lighter than the original Coleman/Fleetwood models (cheaper quality) has also effected their sales.

We traded in our small Taos for a new Somerset Santa Fe, mostly because of the steel frame and Sunbrella fabric that is mold/rot resistant, and also because of the weight class at 1700lbs. We didn't want to buy a new TV. They have the patented sink lift system that seemed more substantial than the Forest River and something about the roof lift system which was supposedly improved (according to the salesman). There are some things I really miss from the Coleman, but so far (only 4 camping trips so far) we are pleased with it. The mattresses are horrible though so I need to get a foam topper, and the table is both heavy and clumsy, I much preferred the folding table from the Coleman Taos, and there are no drawers, only cabinets, but plenty of them, as well as the water on demand hot water system. It was expensive but DH wanted to buy new, and it wasn't much more than the Forest River, but we opted for the model that doesn't come with the bathroom and built in stereo, which really jacked up the price. Personally, I like the black and silver look.

It will be interesting to hear from Somerset owners over time, on whether they have been able to improve the designs!

Are you correlating being significantly lighter with being cheaper quality? My mind tends to do just the opposite.

Yup. I've seen both old and new and trust me, the reason they're so light is that there's a lot of metal and wood missing that was there before, and my trailer's case, plastic. Grrrrrrr...
