It wasn't because of a quality issue (material cost may have been high, but there was a long history they would have economic scale for purchasing) and they had the best dealers at the time, so you would think it was owners profit expectations.

Coleman went out of business because the company took the business back from Fleetwood and it was during bad economy time to sell popup. Had they waited a year or two, it may have worked out... didn't use bail out loan... sigh Like General Motors did.

Some business lessons to be learned because it doesn't seem like Somerset is carrying on the tradition?

Somerset appears to be dropping the ball...
Coleman went bust because of costs and the bottom dropping out of the market.
If you look at current sales figures, RV sales are up but popup sales are down.
"According to the latest RV retail registrations report from Statistical Surveys Inc. (SSI), towables continued their upward climb in June.Total retail sales in June were 7.3% ahead of sales in June, 2013.
For the first half of the year, towable sales were up 6.3%. According to SSI, the June growth came in travel trailers and fifth-wheels.
    • Sales for the high-volume travel trailer sector grew 10.7% for the month and 8.8% year-to-date.
    • Fifth-wheel registrations rose 0.9% in June and were up 1.8% for the six months.
    • Folding camping trailer sales were down 11.4% for the month and 6.3% through the first six months.
    • Park model sales fell 2.5% in May and 5.5% for the six months.
Forest River Inc. led the towable RV market in June with 37.4% market share, with Thor Industries Inc. coming in with 36.9% market share and Jayco Inc. holding 13.1% of the market for the month.
Through the first six months of 2014, Thor held 36.7% of the towable market share, just slightly ahead of Forest River’s 36.6% market share, with Jayco rounding out the top three with 13.1% market share.
By segment, Forest River was No. 1 in travel trailer sales through the first six months with 37.7% market share, followed by Thor with 34.4% and Jayco with 14.1% market share. In fifth-wheels, Thor held the top spot with 49.3% market share, followed by Forest River with 31.1% and Jayco with 8.7%.
In folding camping trailers, Forest River had 64.3% market share in the first six months, followed by Jayco with 14.2% and Columbia Northwest with 10.8%. The top three park model builders for the first six months were Kropf Manufacturing Co. Inc. with 15.6% market share, Skyline Corp. with 13% market share and Thor with 12% market share."

I'm not sure of how many active members there are...or how many of them are polled here, but out of total members registered, it only represents 2.4%. The per cents that would have weight would be tedious to garner... [2C]

Well if you consider 62% of members are Tenderfoot, doing a survey is not going to be one of their early areas they participate in, so that would increase the sampling to 6.3% AND that you can put your [2C] on! [:D]

and of course this is backward looking as opposed to current sales numbers.

It really surprised me how dominant Fleetwood/Coleman was, and yet they couldn't hold on. People here pretty much assume you have a Coleman unless told otherwise... For whatever reason, when we were looking at used pups this past spring, none of them that we looked at were Coleman... they just weren't coming up in the search... not sure why. We looked at a couple Starcrafts, a Jayco, and ended up buying our Palomino.

I guess Coleman/Fleetwood had a business model that required them to crank out a large number of popups per day, and as the market softened, they just couldn't keep up. The other manufacturers must have been at a small enough scale that they could scale back (as well as rely on sales from their larger RV lines)

It is definitely a business case study, but at the same time Berkshire Hathaway was buying up some other competitors.

B-H has a proven take over strategy so I would presume they handled the buy out slightly differently and have been successful in gaining market share.

But even recently they still have a 35% market share!!

Not many want to sell their Coleman popup... that is why its hard to find those used Coleman popups.
