Depends on the state. Many require special licensing and TV/Trailer requirements can be strict. Some don't allow it at all.

I understand that there are state laws not allowing it, but the act of doing it isn't necessarily unsafe.

Actually, tandem tows are generally more stable than long tows. Backing up is fun though lol

As long as the truck was sized right to pull tandem, there should be no issue with the rig pulling a prius tandem behind the 5er [2C]

I'd be more worried about if the 5er could handle it than the truck. Is the frame and rear hitch designed for that much weight and can the brakes handle it if the dolly doesn't have its own?

We're spending this weekend in our dark side at a state park. We have a writing project to complete. We could have sat inside our sticks and bricks. We chose to sit inside and look out at trees and other campers. It became our writers cabin in the woods.

So my answer to why bother is I'd rather be stuck inside at a campground than at home.

I'll agree with that. I made the assumption that someone pulling that behind the unit purchased a unit that could. I'd love to have a big 5er like that one day.

And I missed the posts about sitting in the camper all weekend watching movies. I haven't done that but it sounds fantastic! Maybe that's how they get away from the house. If we are sitting around having a lazy day at the house there's still laundry and other little chores to do and you're not really away. I'd love to take the wife without kids and spend all morning the first day watching movies; then maybe go to a winery and/or have a nice dinner out. Then come back to a fire with a glass of wine and cigar, then wake up late the next day and pack up and leave. If we did this our neighbors would think whats the point?? And I could care less what they thought about it.

Anyway, I can see the appeal in doing this for some. To each their own.

I not only keep a lookout for popups when traveling, I can't help but check out their towing geometry with a critical eye ... is the tongue too high, too low or just right? Is the TV's tail down from too much weight and needs a WDH? Just a little game I play to keep the boredom at bay on those long interstate drives ... [LOL]

Not so much the geometry, but I seem to have a fixation on tow chains. Of course, this is usually the most neglected safety gear, so they they are often "not right"

We don't see many PUPs on the road when we go camping, maybe is that we arrive at the camp grounds on Thursday and usually don't leave until Monday. Although we do see quite a few coming into the campground on Fridays.

I second this! I've already proposed an adults-only camping trip to my hubby so we can enjoy some time without kids or chores. We'll probably do some grilling, but it will be fancy steaks or something!!!!

Orchid, I haven't lived there since '75. I know a lot of things have changed. Was Tipper's a bar? I know at one time it seemed every 6mo there would be a new bar where an old one use to be. My dad still lives there. I was just there from before Thanksgiving til day after New Year's camped out in the popup, brrrrrrrrrr it was cold!!

Yep, it was a bar owned by Joe Joy. The brick building there on the left (coming from Fairmont) right on the main road through Monongah.

Agreed. I was talking to a co-worker this morning about this. Over the July 4 holiday we had a campground neighbor a couple sites down that showed up in a really nice fiver with a nice new truck to tow it all. But other than set up and take down, we never saw them outdoors one time. They spent the entire weekend inside their camper.

What's the point?

Me, one of the highlights of the Pup is being able to sleep with the windows open, feeling the nighttime breeze and listing to nature, especially waking up to the birds singing in the morning. [:)C]
My neighbor does this but at night he pops out to build a fire I don't get it!!

That is EXACTLY why we haven't gone to a TT. The DD's want bunks and a dedicated bath would be wonderful for them and the DW but both she and I agree that's what hotel rooms are for and opening the PUP to the breeze and stars at night is perfect.

Rusty, our family estate is just above Harrisburg and we travel from Jax, FL up I-95, through Richmond and into Inner Harbor Baltimore to p/u I-83 which takes me through York, Harrisburg then a few miles over the mountains to Tower City. If Traffic is bad in DC and when isn't (about 0200-0500) we'll take US-50 over to I-81 then up past Gettysburg, Harrisburg and home.

No we haven't taken the old PUP but we do plan on taking the N2U we just bought but NOT with the Minivan as I want something with better tow capacity for the mountains so maybe next summer. It would be a wonderful trip as there are many places to pull off and stop for the night if we don't want to travel the whole distance in one shot (which is what I normally do, 14 hrs straight through). Once at the family estate there are several places to run power and water to the PUP and if we want a different spot out of the way my brother and nephew will be happy to set up the area specific for us. Yeah, I guess it's obvious I miss being up there...maybe soon.

Somewhere in Idaho
See a lot of double tows out here in ID heading up I-15. Most with toy hauler trailers and likely going up to yellowstone or further to Glacier.

Good to know I have company scouting out other campers in route. Even if I am not towing the Aframe I always smile (literally) when I see any camper in tow. I wonder where they are going, where they've been. Always check for bikes, kayaks, canoes..... just the thought of a trip even if it's not my own makes me happy. Camping is a wonderfully satisfying way to spend ones time even the unexpected issues that arise usually make the best stories for years. So I usually smile, ponder, and wish them well. Neat to learn others watch too!
