I am thinking about replacing the old built-in cabinet with a more useful new cabinet, for use by the Chief Cook and Bottle Washer (or designee).

two drawers on full extension slides, tall enough to hold canned food.

bottom "bin" will simply slide on the vinyl floor (on felt pads if needed).

The object is to have more accessible space despite that wheel well being in the rear.

No face-frame will be used, drawers are directly accessible. They will not open in transit due to how we pack for travel.

Any comments before I start making sawdust?

Update: old "cabinet" is now removed. The cabinet's top unscrewed at its OEM clip angles, so the remaining "U" shaped cabinet can be rotated through the door opening (which would otherwise be too narrow to allow passage of the cabinet). Which also means that I need to rethink my notion of making the new cabinet up as one unified structure (with a top) before installing it in the Aliner.

I like a shelf , with bins. So get 3 bins and make 2 shelves. Takes up less room then having slides. Also you can make the front more open, so ypu can get a wider bin, or store something else on the side of the bin.

FYI - all the square-drive screws fastening the old cabinet's cleats to the wall - their only grip is on the 1/8" thick (approx) plywood on the inside of the wall. There is no blocking inside the wall "sandwich" to assist in anchoring the screws and any of the cleat locations.

the top cleat is glued to the wall, so I will leave it there, even though I will be raising the top about 7/8" for my new cabinet.

Front is 100% open - there will be no face frame!

I don't lose much volume to drawer slides and gain a LOT in utility. So upper two levels are drawers (like our custom pantry at home) and bottom level is a bin.
And good luck finding bins that fit your available space. They always seem to be wrong in at least one dimension. Which is why I built my under-bed storage bin out of plywood and aluminum angle. Which reminds me - I need to find a bin for that lower level! (else make one)

it won't be fancy - its wood from Home Depot. But it will be functional.

Are you going to reestablish the structural component the old cabinet provided to the wall?

Its a small project, but a little fiddly as it has to fit in an established space, and have a solid set of dimensions since I am using side mounted drawer slides. I am not rushing the project as I like to have multiple nights to let the design ramifications percolate thru my noggin.

Today I did go so far as to buy lumber (Birch plywood and hardwood cleats) and CSK (true) wood screws from Home Depot.

I can’t wait to see the after pictures. I’m sure it’s going to look even better than the existing ones.

it won't look better, but it will work better. I will include photos of the upper storage system and the galley on the opposite side so that y'all can get the big picture o accessible storage, i.e., storage that is not under someone's butt

I tried Amazon, Home Depot, Container Store, Lowes ---- DW picked up a bin as we were walking through WallyWorld and sez "how about this one?" I pulled out my tape measure and it was only off by 1/2". Sold. Horrible color but you can't winnem all.
