I like the set-up, but just have to say that I pioneered this back in the 90's! I had a 1990 Chevy Z71 step side with a tonneau cover and wanted a way to transport my bike while keeping my tools and gear dry. Yakima and Thule were not quite as advanced as they are now, but I bought the Yakima rack base plates (base plates were for mounting the rack towers to a fiberglass pickup cap where there was no rain gutter to attach to), mounted them to the top of the bed with some threaded inserts, under the rails for the tonneau, atached the towers, cross bars, and a couple of bike racks. Worked really slick - as you can attest to. I guess I should have patented my system!
