Well, as DW would say I finally have joined the modern world. Got rid of the flip phone and replaced it with an I phone. I'm looking to add some apps for weather info while camping and map/gps info. Any recommendations for good apps to look into?

    Thanks

    Hi from a former Iowan!

For weather, I have installed The Weathcer Channel app and the AccuWeather app. I have some friends that swear by the Wx Alert USA app; I haven't used it, so I can't comment.

For maps/GPS, I have Google Maps, and have just recently installed MotionX Drive. There is a Garmin app that will sync with certain Garmin units (I don't have the right Garmin unit to use this one). I've actually had okay luck with the maps that come with the iPhone as well.

I never had any luck with the accuweather app, I switched to intellicast and have been very happy with it. I also use an app called cyclemeter for all my biking/hiking needs

I purchased Campwhere app that is an interactive US map showing National, State, & County campgrounds with links for more details. Think it was $5 and well worth it.

Carlos, a flip phone is what I got when I retired my bag phone. [;)]

2nd vote for the Weather Channel App. It even allows you to add locations for your upcoming trips to see the weather up to 10 days ahead.

I use Android Navigation and Google Maps. Google Earth is cool, but hard to see on smart phone screen.

That's my next phone. Getting rid of the iPhone since I have an ipad, going super simple to the point this thing has a pen to write in the address book!

Get "The Pocket Ranger" app, you can down load by state. It has some great info.

RainAware. Uses GPS to pinpoint your location and plots it on the nearest radar and calculates when it will start/stop raining. I was really skeptical at first but if you have a good signal or wifi and your GPS (location services) is on it is very accurate, but only works if you have a signal or wifi. It refreshes every so often so the times will change as it updates. 5 stars well worth the money. On a recent trip we were packing up before the rain hit, App was correct to the minute as to when the rain would begin. Made it out dry!!!!

    Colornote

Really great app that lets you create a checklist and cross items off as you pack them. Once done, you can uncheck the items and get ready for your next trip!

I use weatherbug, it's simple and easy to use. The app that I REALLY like is Google Sky Map. Point the phone up to the skies and it tells you which constellation/stars you are looking at. My kids get a kick out of that.

I also use Google Earth for 3-D mapping of areas that I am in.

A flashlight app is the thing I use the most when camping. I always seem to pack my actual flashlights away and don't feel like digging for them.

Also, when I forget my level (90% of the time) I level my camper with "Handy Level". It gets it close enough.
