I’m sure plenty of you have camped around the Black Hills. I’m planning a trip and want to find a campground close to Rapid City, I have a friend that lives there. I’m taking my kayak so would like a lake along with being fairly close to hiking sight seeing. I don’t need the ritz just a shady spot with electric and a bath house, I don’t need a pool. I’m an older single female so a little user friendly. I will be leaving from central Iowa, this will be my longest haul alone.
    Thank for any suggestions
    Pat

Hope you have fun there Pat! I assume you take the interstate across SD?? If so, wave to my folks for me when you pass through Chamberlain. We stayed at a nice privet CG just up the hill from Rapid and I'll ask my spouse if she recalls its name.

Sorry not much to add other than have a great time. When I was 14 my parents took such a trip and even though I began to really hate sitting next to my brothers. I remember really loving the trip. Out of all the trips we took as a family I remembered that one the most. Not to mention aced my geography class the following school semester. My two favorite places that I loved the most was the bad lands and mount Rushmore. I also remember very clearly walking the small quaint town to get ice cream.

I would love to do that trip as an adult.

Have a great trip Pat. Going that way myself next month. Staying at Badlands NP then Devils Tower. Then on to the Beartooth Mts and Yellowstone.

Never been... Sounds fun though all except I would avoid the water If I could with all the people and Flesh eating bacteria cases going around. Not trying to be a buzzkill. But a day of fun on the water isn't worth a life... Thats just my opinion though... I'm paranoid. Anyways happy camping hope all goes well.

When I took my grandkids, we stayed at Rapid City/Black Hills KOA. We had several RV's trying to stay together during the peak season so, we needed advanced reservations. Typical KOA sardines but all you could eat pancakes for a buck. Custer State Park Center Lake and Lake Sylvan I like better but they are about an hour or so west of Rapid City.

Kamp Grounds of America. They are a corporate camp ground place with sites all over the US. Some have Kamping Kabins (their spelling) as well as RV and tent sites.

You're welcome. I think it's a bit too much "sardine can" camping, but sometimes necessary.

Sturgis Bike Rally runs 1-10 August this year. Lots of bikers head towards Deadwood, Sturgis and Rapid City a few days before it starts, so campgrounds fill pretty quickly. We rode up the last 4 days of the rally in 2015 and it was packed (75th Anniversary). Just info to keep in mind!

Oh gee, I forgot all about the rally. The southern hills would be much less busy and personally, we'd then avoid the central and northern portions. Long ago I, resided and worked in the southern part of the hills for a few years. That was my RR days.

Yes, I’ll probably put it off until September now.
    Thanks for the heads up
