Re-post from Campground / Trip Planning & Suggestions:

South Mountains State Park has two campgrounds, one for equestrian camping and another non-equestrian campground. The equestrian campground has always been nice, but the non-equestrian campground was not as nice. South Mountains State Park is the largest State Park in North Carolina with 18,000 acres.

The non-equestrian campground is currently closed for improvements. A Ranger told me they "hope" to have this campground open next April. One or two sites will have electricity & water and the rest will not. My "guess" is they will have 12 or more sites in this campground. They are building a new restroom/shower house and improving the existing campsites with new tent pads/fire rings/picnic tables and adding sites. The Ranger said there is room on some of the sites for trailers up to 16' long.

The activities we enjoy at South Mountain are hiking and photography. We see others fly fishing and mountain biking. They have horse trails, too.

Here's some photos I took while we were hiking there today. The rhododendrons stay green year around.

We stopped for a day visit at this park about two years ago. It is a very nice park. They had some nice plans laid out to do some serious construction (modern campground) but due to the state budget I think it was axed.... Its a shame, we really like the park, just really no where to camp... The hike along the river was beautiful! [:)C]

    Visited South Mountains SP today.

They hope to have the improved campground open during the first part of May. There will be one handicap site and two RV sites with electricity. Don't know if these sites will have water at each site. They said it's Ok to camp with a Pop-Up or TT at the tent sites as long as the RV & TV will fit in the tent site parking area. The tent sites do not have electricity.

South Mountains SP website shows site with electricity and vehicle length:

Looks like the shower house will be very nice. They added a few sites and are making improvements to the sites, too.

The RV sites with electricity accommodate vehicles up to 50' with driveways 85 & 90' long. We will eventually camp on both RV sites and tent sites where we fit. The lady I talked to yesterday said as long as the TV & RV will fit in the tent parking area without sticking out in the main road, it's OK to camp on that site. Looks like some of the parking areas may allow parking the RV/TV side by side, too.

Will see when they complete construction.

That's a beautiful area, and close to where we live. I can see the South Mountains on the horizon, from my house. Shame though, there's no more than a handful of electric sites.

Wanted to see more electric sites, too. Looking forward to camping there since we enjoy hiking. My Wife has been driving the camping rig, so will follow on our motorcycle to ride the foothills & higher elevations while camping there, too.

It appears only 3, 2 RV and one handicap site. I can manage without the power.

    Correct!

We cheat & have a "quiet" 2400 Yamaha Gen-Set to run for "short" periods of time, if needed.
