Just saw the International Space Station fly over. Always a cool sight. Used to watch the Shuttle fly when it's orbit path took it overhead at the right viewing time. It's kind of amazing to think you can see something flying over in outerspace!
A few years back I was able to see the shuttle and ISS just after they had separated, so you could see two distinct space craft...that was pretty cool. This is a great website for finding info on passes: http://www.heavens-above.com/
I remember that..seeing them both at the same time, but I don't remember if it was before they docked or after they seperated. Seems to me they stayed in formation for at least a day. Probably checking every inch of the shuttle for tile damage.
A couple years ago I got a picture of the space station, from my back yard. Then there's this guy who got the space station silhouetted against the moon. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1323740
This was the one I used to use to find when the best time to see the shuttle was. Also good for the ISS ans the other satellites. http://www.n2yo.com/
I have the NASA app for my iPhone and it will tell you viewing times for the ISS Space Station based on your location...and the times are exact! There are alot of other features on the app but I only use it for this sole purpose.
SatTrack is the Heavens Above app for Android. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.heavensabove&hl=en
Is there a way to identify a satellite in a particular part of the sky? The trackers tend to show the satellite from above as opposed to looking up at the sky.
ANother Android app is ISS detector. For free it gives you the ISS and Iridium sats, if you go premium you can get all kinds of others, the AF X37, weather sats etc.
As a ham radio operator, when I am camping I try to find the ISS and make radio contact 2 meter/ 146MHz. It doesn't take much to reach out to them. The trick is whether they are listening at the time. Out of the many times that I have tried I was lucky enough only once to get them. I was able to talk to them for about a minute and a half.
I had a reminder set on my phone for the fly over last Fri. night AND my son showed up at the house to visit and completely missed it!! Priorities!
i go camping up by the shenadoah national park and we get to see all kinds of sats and this past fall saw the ISS. It was very cool!!!
Wow!!! Now that would be just about the Greatest thing to ever happen. My problem is that I would be so excited, I would forget what I wanted to say.
Yeah, it was AWESOME. At first I wasn't sure that it was even them responding and when I knew it was I stuttered the first couple of words. They are really friendly. They asked where I was and then proceeded to describe what they were seeing as they flew over. At first I thought it was strange that they would ask where I was calling from, but then it donned on my that they could see the entire country and would have been able to have been reached from any of the states.
