Anyone have any experience with this? Sometimes these awnings come in pretty gawdy colors - is anyone aware of an effective way to change the color on the awning itself?

I would be very cautious about using anything that would interact on a molecular level with the materials such as fabric, plastic, vinyl and even the thread. Even some common household cleaning products can be harmful to your awning. Some type of latex paint might be OK but with the awning being rolled and unrolled, I can see adhesion and thus peeling being a problem. Why not just get some gawdier awning lights so that the awning itself looks pretty good? [}:)]
