Somehow I missed this thread until now. We just got back from Yellowstone last week so EVERYONE has been forwarding or asking me about this story.

According to the article, this happened on or near the observation point trail at Old Faithful. I was on that trail so I know exactly where this is. It's not something you would "stay in your car" for as the nearest parking is several hundred yards away. But... as noted, they were within feet of the animal for a very long time... and some accounts even say they were petting it. Eventually it showed who was in charge.

I'm glad the girl was OK, but this is just purely stupid. They tell you ALL over the park to stay back at least 75 feet from bison and 150 from bears and wolves.

My brother had the best comment: "Well last year they went to Disney and had a picture with Mickey Mouse... so this year they wanted to have a picture with one of Yellowstone's famous characters"

Latest Darwin winner, a seventeen year old boy tried to take himself out of the gene pool.
He missed the mark, the buffalo only got his leg.
Video of people in Yellowstone around buffalo is unbelievable.

I remember my first trip to Yellowstone. It was 1964. At that time, feeding the animals, bears in particular, was a national pastime. All along the route leading into the park, bears were camped out along the curb waiting for people to roll down their windows and feed them. We were staying in my Aunt and Uncle's pop-up camper. During naptime a bear got stuck in the trash barrel that was within 2 feet of the bunk end I was sleeping in. Bears were seen all through out the campground, stealing food and really not causing any mischief. I clearly remember a scene with a Moose and a man placed his young child on top to take a picture. Different times to be sure. I'm sure MANY wild animals were killed as a result of that behavior. I don't remember, but I'm sure it occurred, any human injury stories.

We were at Cade's Cove last Spring. Saw quite a few bears with cubs, most with binoculars because I'm not an idiot.
Then saw about a dozen people walking down through a pasture, making a beeline for a bear with her cub.

I shook my head and drove off, everyone had their phones up taking pictures and the bear was up on her hind legs looking at them.
Probably 75 feet apart and still walking straight towards her and the cub.

    Nope, no thanks.

A few years back a almost ran into a mama bear with a cub or two while mountain biking at Unicoi State Park in GA. I turned a corner at speed and they were in the middle of the trail. That was probably the best braking I have ever done in my life. Bears got spooked and ran away and my heart rate was of the chart. The kid backpacking doesn't sound like a complete idiot. Maybe a bit naive and inexperienced but not like a moron.

I went to The Smokey mountains and when the elk hang out at the Oconaluftee visitor cente , all the rangers are out there with stop signs. Telling visitors to keep a distance. One idiot didn't like he had to stay back so moved to another section away from the ranger and got closer and closer to the elk. I on the other hand, retreated. I didn't want it to charge in my direction. I still got some decent photos with my camera, got to love zoom.
