I noticed some photos online showing PUP being popped down and the outside of the canvas laying on the mattress/bedding.

We have done this with all our PUPs to help keep the mattress/bedding cleaner:

Attach on the underside (on wood part of the bunk) a large plastic tarp. It can stay folded-flat under the mattress when you are popped up and using the bed. When you break down, just pull the plastic tarp over your mattress/bedding to cover it and the canvas will lay on top of the plastic tarp and not on your mattress/bedding.

The plastic tarp will also give your mattress/bedding some extra protection in case you ever get a leak from rain while driving or storing.

Hope this suggestion helps some of you who are new to PUPing. <img src=../Images/icons/icon_smile_pu.gif border=0 align=middle>

We remove our bedding and wash it after each trip(hopefully 1 set of sheets are sweaty if ya know what I mean), then place it in a rubbermaid tub with a few odds and ins. We keep the tub in the basement and add items to it as needed. Put the tub in the Pup when we pull out for the next trip. The mattress stays empty when the pup is closed, which I tell myself it allows the mattress to breath and not get smelly.

Another helpful tip for keeping your mattress clean:

Don't share your camper with anyone from this forum:

    DCampbell,

Maybe my suggestion post above was not clear enough.

I was suggesting to do this to help keep your mattress and bedding clean while you travel from one campsite to another on longer trips. And also, if you make up your beds with bedding before you leave home when you are loading your PUP.

We always remove our bedding after a camp-out to clean also. However, even while storing the PUP....the tarps over the mattress will keep the mattress clean and away from the outside of the canvas when you pop the PUP down. They will also give extra protection from leakage if your camper roof seals start to leak during the winter...if store outside.

Maybe this post clears up my original post better.

Oh, gotcha! I was in a fog yesterday...

I read somewhere, that someone had come up with an actual plastic mattress cover for their pup. Similar thought.
We do wait to put the sheets on, but a good use of the tarps when closing up, especially during a rain. Plus I probably have too many tarps already, since recently moving over from tenting.

We skip the sheets, use our sleeping bags, I air them out every sunny day at campsite...dry clean once a year..I only get 4 weekends in a year though...

I have sheets to throw over the sleeping bag to keep Buddie's muddy little feet off the sleeping bag...

Yeah, I am doing the same thing. It seems wierd that no one takes there shoes off at home, but they will when we are camping. I think it became a habit with tent camping. Kind of like who wears their shoes to bed.

The first time I closed down the PU for the next nights CG and reopened it there were leaves and tree stuff on the bunks. I like the tarp idea Monakayak- thanks for the suggestion. Now maybe I will not have to strip off the sheets and comforters each night when we travel.

    banahj,

I was stripping our bedding off too each time we broke down the PUP and went to our next stop on a lonnnnnnnnng camping trip. That WAS the pits!! So now all we have to do is flip the tarp out over the bedding and it is all covered and no way it will get soiled or wet from anything!

Now that I have the Aspen I can't leave the bedding on between stops.

However, when I had "The Rock" I used sleeping bags for bedding tops and just left them on the bed - protected side up. And they doubled as "anti-rattle" cushions for the pop-up support braces.

We've only been out a handful of times...Does the bed really get that dirty from the canvas? I am a total clean freak and this is something I have never thought of.

I use a zipped vinyl mattress cover for the queen mattress...still looking for one for the king bed. For some reason Walmart doesn't carry that size.
