Anyone have campground suggestions for the summer in the area of Wind Cave and Mt. Rushmore? We are looking for a place to park for a few days and do day trips. Showers are a must!

We stayed overnight in Custer State Park at the Stockade Lake North campground. We we driving cross country from east to west. We had visited Mt Rushmore and the Rushmore caves earlier in the afternoon and spent one night at Custer State Park. The next morning we were off to Yellowstone. It was a nice campground. There was a large open field and a slide and swings that weren't new but nice; the kids had fun. Not knowing the park, we didn't have the greatest campsite; a bit open for my liking. I don't know if it will serve your purpose but it is worthing considering. There are some very interesting tunnels and rock features in this State Park. There are other campgrounds in this State Park that you could look at as well.

    Good luck.

Try Mt Rushmore Resort on Hwy 16A Between Custer and Keystone. It used to have a swimming pool. Or there was Flintstone Village Campground around Custer. These two would get you more centralized in the Black Hills. There also used to be a nice campground west of Mt. Rushmore about 4 miles.

If you are into old bones, there is quite a dig in Hot Springs. If you camp at Custer, consider a drive over to Sundance, Wy to Devils Tower National Monument.

It has been about 5 years since I have been there. If you have any questions about a particular campground, I have friends that live in Rapid City and maybe I can have them check it out. Just let me know. Or better yet, see if there is a PUP member from Western S.D. that can give you advise.

Remember the first week or so in August is Sturgis Bike Rally, so campgrounds do get full the closer to Sturgis you get.

We are staying a couple of nights at Custer State Park in June. It seemed a pretty central location to the attractions in the area, has showers and electric, and isn't a "RV parking lot". We're staying at the Sylvan Lake CG. When you go into the reservations system, there are pictures of every site.

We stayed at Grace Coolidge Campground in the Custer State Park this past summer. Was a great Campground (not very big) with a brand new bathhouse.

Thanks for the feedback. Like Tking01, we are going in Early July and had to wait for DW's work to approve the leave. We were looking a Custer State Park and the National Forest campgrounds in the area. Custer looks nice and the price seems reasonable. As long as the showers are warm, DW and DK's will be happy.

We stayed at the Mt. Rushmoore KOA. We stayed there only 1 night. We were driving out to Yellowstone and stopped by to see the monument and stayed the night. The CG was nice and clean and the bathrooms/showers were very clean and nice.

Reading these posts is so exciting! It will make the rest of the winter more bearable. We are planning a trek (!) for late in the summer. SD has a nice website and we ordered our travel packet last night. I hope there is a Walmart close to several of the cities on our route. Plotting those will be the next step in planning so we don't have to take all the stuff with us, but can buy along the way as needed. Thank you!

Walmart has a spiral bound Road Map that is really good, and it also lists all the Walmarts in the country. I've used my map for a number of years and found it very user friendly.....

The more we read about the region, the longer we want to stay. At first we were hoping to see Jewel Cave, Wind Cave, and Rushmore. But we are learning more about Hot Springs, Custer State Park, and other regional sights (Devil's Tower and Bad Lands). Too much to do and see in just a few days. We are already getting excited about our trip! <img src=../Images/icons/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle alt="Big Smile">

Our family was just out there last September. You should plan on a few days if possible, We stayed at the Palmer Gulch/ Rushmore KOA. It was a very nice place. Some of the places you can't miss besides Rushmore and Crazy Horse are

    1) The Badlands scenic route
    2) The Needles highway. This road is full of mountain switchbacks and scenic views.
3)Custer state park and the wildlife loop. We saw several heards of Bison and other wildlife. The "interior" park roads make for a pleasant scenic drive around the park.

    Have a great trip.

We are getting more and more excited the more we plan this trip! Thank you for all of the suggestions! We also found Jewel Cave and Crazy Horse, so we are now looking at 6 days in the area, I think. I also have a feeling that it will be hard to leave western SD!
And, there is so much that is close by, that it will be hard to save the other sites for a future trip/trek! We were able to get free camping guides at AAA and maps for each state. Now to find out if AAA has maps of some of the National Parks/Sites in the Rapid City area.

If you check the Custer State Park website, they have pictures of each camp site so that you can pick a "better" site over another. We chose site 2E at Stockade Lake North for Memorial Day weekend because it had trees and was close to the bath house and playground. Custer also has electricity at their sites, which is a nice option.

Obviously, the Black Hills is a prime tourist destination, so there are campgrounds galore! You have the option of inexpensive forestry sites all the way to RV resorts.

If you're on a budget (like we always are) you can find some things to do for FREE while in the area. If you're a Little House on the Prairie fan, there is a free museum in Keystone located in the old school building. Carrie Ingalls use to live in Keystone and there are personal items of hers at the museum. Our girls love the place! Down in Rapid City, the museum at the School of Mines is free and very interesting and if you have little ones, Storybook Island is a fun place to visit. If you head over to Hot Springs and don't want to spend the money to swim at Evans Plunge, you can wade in the stream that flows from the same (? I think it's the same)hot spring that Evans Plunge uses! It's warm and there are tons of little spiral shells that the kids can find on the bottom.

Hope you have a nice trip! Pack warm jammies for the kiddos for night time and clothes for warm/hot weather during the day - expect showers in the afternoons.

dgarbers when are you heading out? Maybe our paths will cross. We just made reservations for the Wind River Range in WY near Lander and will be making reservations for around July 10 in the Black Hills.

We are all getting excited. We are letting the kids use the internet to help pick where we stay. I will have to let them look at the individual sites in Custer. They would love it.

Please keep sharing your ideas. I did not know about the Little House museum. My wife and daughter would love it and it would give us more to read together before and while we are traveling.

When I was a kid we stayed at the Mt. Rushmore KOA. I still smile when I think of that place. Probably the most fun I ever had at a CG as a kid.

While driving thru the badlands we took the scenic loop thru. It was something to see. We are from NJ so going out west was a really big deal for us. While driving thru the badlands there was a lightning storm way off in the distance and it was something to see how the lightning came down. While driving thru the scenic loop don't forget to downshift going down some of the hills!

Also, don't forget to stop by Wall Drug in SD! You have to stop by to at least say you went there. Our son loved going thru all the stores in Wall Drug.
