It seems like a really nice product. I didn't look at many other pop ups at the time. There wasn't much around that I wanted. I HAD to have a pop up with slide out and all ammenities. There were 2 within 300 miles. The other one was really expensive and 10 years old. This one was cheap and 4 years old! I got it for $5900. The bank had no problem loaning the money. It booked for a lot more!

    Awesome Upgrade, Mike! NICE!

I did a similar upgrade last year myself when I went from the '75 to the '08 Palomino. Aside from the Slide out that I don't have, I am also pretty much Fully Loaded and now spoiled at camp!

Got a pretty good deal too, I think. Retail 13.5, but purchased for 8700? I think we both made out OK.

Very sharp camper! For a second, it looked like the left front corner behind the storage box was peeled open like a can opener!

Very sharp interior, I like the black counter, and dark cabinets!

This is our new guy. We just picked it up in October. Its an '02 Cheyenne. Technically a Coleman built by Fleetwood- but essentailly the same thing er...used to be anyway. You can tell the window treatments are simlar. It was used very little and kept inside- so the ABS roof is like new. You'll love the front storage box! Enjoy!

The ABS roof is a high impact plastic composite. They earned big praise for style, but began having problems for a variety of reasons, many of which were unknown. Below is an excerpt from the "The Story of a Roof." I figure I'll deal with if/when problems arise. Problems are only supposed to have happened in less than 10% of the roofs.

Fleetwood Folding Trailers (FFT), which was then selling pop ups under the brand name Coleman introduced the ABS (plastic) roof in the 1996 model year. During the early years of introduction the ABS roof was included on almost all Coleman Pop Ups, including some in the Destiny series. So, if you are looking at a 1996-1998 Destiny series, check the roof for type.

FFT manufactured the ABS roofs themselves in their Pennsylvania assembly facility. It was soon found that some roofs began to sag for unknown reasons. The first thought was that the A/C unit caused it and they had dealers retrofit the roofs of pop ups equipped with A/C installed units with a metal bar inside the camper to provide additional support. This bar was added as a regular item to ALL pop ups manufactured sometime in 1998 and a retrofit kit was made available for all older units. The absence or presence of a bar in a pop up does not denote a " new" roof. Currently, if you have a unit that did not come with the bar, FFT is no longer supplying them free of charge. They are included in an A/C install kit and are around $175.

They continued having problems and other factors were investigated, such as exposure to heat. It appeared that pop ups in warmer climates experienced a greater number of sag cases than cooler climates. FFT tried different formulations of ABS plastic but roofs continued to sag. Additionally, the problem appeared more in 12 foot box pop ups than in 10 foot boxes.

The final cause (as well as anyone can like us can figure out) is that roofs manufactured under certain climatic conditions (temperature and humidity) did not allow the ABS plastic to cure properly. It was these roofs that eventually sagged. The number I hear thrown about is that 10% of the ABS roofs manufactured were bad. I think this number is a little high, but who is to know other than FFT.

Sometime around 1999/2000 Coleman finally stopped making the roofs themselves and began buying ABS roofs from an outside vendor. At his point the the sagging problem seems to have lessened to a degree or disappeared. Now those roofs being supplied by the outside vendor began to exhibit other problems, which have been chronicled on internet forums.

    They include:

Delamination: Part of the ABS plastic delaminates from the core of the roof and a blister forms on the surface- mostly from tarp covering in the winter months.

Bowing of front & back seal: The seal area of the front and back portion of the roof, where it contacts the box in the down (or travel position) bows up sufficiently to allow water penetration during driving in rain. This condition appears to go away after 24 to 48 hours sitting in the down position. Some believe that the shepherds hook used to push out the bed end canvas pushes up into the seal during use and bends it out of shape. At least 2 different styles of seals/gaskets were introduced in an attempt to correct this problem.

Both of these problems appear to be limited to a small number of roofs.

If you are the original owner of a Coleman pop up defective ABS roof you have little to worry about. The ABS roof has a lifetime warranty.

This post should probably be somewhere else, but oh well.

WOW!!! --------- My mouth was wide open while I read that post. So my camper, being an 05, does have the ABS roof that was supplied by the outside vendor. I sure hope I don't get any of that bowing. Absolutely incredible. Do we know if the BRAND NEW campers are going to have that problem down the line?

No, you have an Aluminum roof. Fleetwood quit using the ABS roof in 2003.

RhinoDave is correct, you won't have any of these issues. But since you asked the short question, I thought I give you the long answer! Didn't mean to scare you. You're all set! Have fun!

FYI- I probably won't have any problems either since it was limited to a small number of pups and I have the 10 ft box. But its good information for me to have.

    Mike,

I ask this question not to be doubtful about your camper, but because I'm a bit perplexed.

Are you sure your camper is a 2002? The reason I ask is because the front storage box was still integrated, as far as I know, in 2002. I don't think they started with the separate box until mid-2003...

    Hi Digger,

When the camper was brought to the dealer for trade in, it did have the integrated storage box. However, I was told it had been irrepairably damaged because of a car backing into the side of it. So the dealer removed the integrated box and replaced it with the newer fleetwood seperate box.

Interestingly, if you go inside my camper, there is a door panel and rocker switch on the front side interior of the box. This was to allow interior access to the integrated storage along with the light switch. Well, the door panel is cosmetic at this point. It has been permanently mounted and weather sealed from the outside, and the rocker switch no longer does anything. It looks nice, but its there because it is an '02 model year unit. Dealer laughed at me when I tried to open it.

There is also a manufacturer's plate on the side of the camper indicating the date of build. It was built in late 2001. I'm also pretty sure I'd have the same worry-free aluminum roof as fishguy if it was an '03.

Your the first person to notice that one- way to pick up on the deatails!
