I have to show you this picture I got of the Rockland Tunnel a couple of weeks ago. This picture would never be attainable in the summer time because the sun is too high in the sky. This is one of two tunnels on our local rail trail system. The Rockland Tunnel is 5/8 of a mile long and has a very sharp hook in the end. There is a distance of about 50 feet where neither end is visible and you are in total darkness.

The other tunnel is the Kennerdell tunnel. It is 3/4 of a mile in length and has a very gradual curve. You are in complete darkness for much of it's distance. Both tunnels have paved bike paths through them, so bring your bike and a good flashlight to Venango County, PA and take the ride !! It's well worth it.

Nice pic. Looks like the headlight of a ghost train deep inside!

Very nice Dave! Love that photo.

Reminds me of the Elroy-Sparta trail in WI which is one of my favorite childhood memories. We used to vacation and bike that trail in the summer. 3 tunnels and one of them is about 3/4 miles in length. In summer you often can't see either end due to the coolness creating a fog at either entrance. Very surreal!

Nice photo, very interesting. I am also awestruck by the engineering that goes into building a tunnel with brick. It seems that there would be nothing to hold the bricks at the very top in place. It is amazing to me that the brick could support the tons of earth that it does.

It's amazing that I live about an hour away from here and never heard of this place. I think I may venture over there this summer.

Here's some information about our trail system for those who are interested... http://www.avta-trails.org/index.html

And, of course, there are albums for each of the three local trails in my Picasa albums.... http://picasaweb.google.com/1themanfromvan

Look for the Sandy Creek Trail - The Allegheny River Trails 1 & 2 and The Justus Trail. Other albums in there like 'Rockland Township Hot Spots', Kennerdell-Rockland, Waterfalls, and the Guy's Day Out albums will show you venues nearby the trails and our home.

As far as campgrounds, the best I can recommend is Two Mile Run County Park. It is about 12 miles away from all the best outdoor spots. There are some pictures from Two Mile in amongst my albums, too. Just be forewarned if you stay there that our local car racin' dirt track is about two miles away as the crow flies. If you're there on a Sunday night, you're gonna be serenaded by big blocks with open headers until about 10 PM or so. [:D] [:D]

Thanks Dave. Like Erich, it reminds me of the Sparta - Elroy in WI. Those old brick lined tunnels really add character to a trail.

I was out on the trails again today. It was a perfect day for a winter hike and I never saw another person for nearly 5 hours....
