Anybody been to this one? I've read online that the bathrooms are in pretty bad shape and the beaches are filthy. Just wondering if y'all thought this was accurate. If so, any recommendations on camping on the coast?

I was going to book a trip there, but I also heard negative reviews so I decided against it. Last time I went to Galveston SP the water was full of sea lice and it was disgusting. I don't know what it's like since Hurrican Ike.

I haven't camped on the coast b/c I like the feel of state parks and the coastal camping that I have seen on-line seems to be more like parking lots and less like campgrounds. Instead we camp near rivers and lakes. Let me know if you find a good coastal/beach park!

Just got back from 4 days at Padre Island national Seashore. See this link.

I'm originally from Corpus and I can tell you this...don't stay here. It's a parking lot with a few covered picnic tables. The bathrooms are pretty nasty as well as the "scenery".

There are a few other spots ont he coast that are much nicer.
Goose Island State Park: new bathrooms and showers on the bayside camp sites. Good fishing as well. DO NOT stay in the woods. The mesquito's will carry your pup away while you aren't looking. I've always stayed at the bayside spots. Those, IMO, are the best. In the summer you get a nice breeze off the water and there's fishing at your door step.
I guess the winter time the wooded spots would be okay. Let me know if you stay there.

    Island RV Resort
Pioneer Beach Resort: this place can be a lot of fun. We've always had a good time. My only complaint is they really pack them in.

There's a lot to chose from. If it were up to me, I'd go with Goose Island State Park.

MG and Queen...those are two different parks.

Mustang Island State Park is the one I referred to in my previous post.

Padre Island Nationsl Seashore (PINS) is some of the most beautiful beach in the state...during the summer. Once you get on the beach you turn right and keep going. After a couple of miles it's a 4x4 only area and trust me...you'll want nothing but a 4x4 there.

I've made several trips down PINS about 50 miles down. We do a lot of shark fishing down there and you'd be amazed how close those big guys are to the shore. :) Matter of fact there's an annual tournament you should check out.

That's what I was afraid of- as far as the parking lot rv parks lyz. That's exactly how it looks in the pictures.

Thanks for the lead on Goose Island and Island RV Resort bpike! I'll check it out.

I know they are different parks - the OP was asking for recommendations. I wouldn't stay at Mustang or Galveston again. Heard nothing but good about Goose Island, but have not been there as of yet.

If I just have to have a fix I have a dear friend with a usually vacant house on Copano Bay. If I head to the Galveston area, I go across the ferry and spend my time and money on the Bolivar peninsula - away from most crowds and crazies.

I don't think there's much left to Bolivar since Ike. Maybe by summer it will have recovered a bit.

So many others were not as fortunate. Telephone calls confirmed that all are well; as a matter of fact if I recall there was no loss of life on the peninsula.

My folks are spending their 4th winter at Pioneer Beach. I visited a couple of years ago when I was in TX on business. They are packed in, but the facilities were spotless, the people extremely friendly and the access to the beach across the dunes was excellent. Their winter crowd are largely seasonal, but seem pretty open to occasional visitors too.
