I’m sure many of you remember Unstable_Tripod. He was a member here for many years though he hadn’t visited recently. Tom was a fountain of information on all aspects of popups, and was always happy to help when folks had problems or questions. We became friends here on the portal, and I so enjoyed spending time with him at pup rallies and on occasion when traveling through WA state where he lived with his wife Kathy.

I am saddened to report that Tom passed away this morning from Stage 4 Glioblastoma, a very aggressive form of brain cancer. He became ill last summer and his condition continued to deteriorate. I’m glad his family was with him and supportive all the way.

RIP, Unstable_Tripod. You will be missed for sure.

I'm so sorry. I enjoyed his photographs too. I'm glad I was able to meet up with him near Grand Canyon for short visit, when we were both there a few years back.

Also, I think I'll talk to my wife, and maybe note in my will, that if I die, then the portal should be notified. We are not friends in the traditional sense of it, but our community does care when loss happens.
Popup Steve was gone awhile. Orchid disappeared for a bit. I can't imagine my morning routine without reading a post by Tombiasi or Snow!

Sorry to hear. Safe travels to whatever lies beyond. I never met him but ran across his posts often over the years. May his family take some solace in his impact to so many people in many ways. Helpful souls seem like a rarity these days, but I am pleased to see our community portal has a surplus of such sentiment.

I'm so saddened to learn of Tom's passing. He was a good man and a friend. Tom was kind enough to invite me to stay with him when I flew out to attend the Arizona PUP Rally in May of 2012. He will be missed.

I wanted to share a quote from Ed Abbey’s wonderful book Desert Solitaire. It is especially appropriate in memory of Tom.

    Benedicto:

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds. May your rivers flow without end, meandering through pastoral valleys tinkling with bells, past temples and castles and poets towers into a dark primeval forest where tigers belch and monkeys howl, through miasmal and mysterious swamps and down into a desert of red rock, blue mesas, domes and pinnacles and grottos of endless stone, and down again into a deep vast ancient unknown chasm where bars of sunlight blaze on profiled cliffs, where deer walk across the white sand beaches, where storms come and go as lightning clangs upon the high crags, where something strange and more beautiful and more full of wonder than your deepest dreams waits for you -- beyond that next turning of the canyon walls.

    Edward Abbey
