pulled in to a backroad boondocking site at Pyramid Lake NV after dark - its down a washboard road and onto coarse sand - and found this (see photo).

The after market TPMS gave no indication of serious trouble.

    Jeep towed fine.

A corrective action plan will be developed.

BTW - the Reno Air Races are great, especially if high gusty winds do not blow out some of the events (we went Friday and Saturday).

That TPMS was money well spent...lol.

I lost a tire once at interstate speeds. It was completely gone and running on the rim. The only reason I discovered it was I noticed the camper leaning to one side.

You might want to get a new rim while you're at it. [LOL] Holy smokes!

As I have said many time before.. a TPMS is only good for slow leaks.. won't give you any advance warning to a blowout.. Glad nothing more then a damaged rim was the result of this..

yes, the "level in rear view mirror' is the trick, good only until night has fallen.

It ticked me off to pull into my sandy campsite at night only to find this destroyed tire. But since I carry two spares, all is well. I was less pleased about the soft surface. But 4WD worked wonders when it came time to hook up the camper and leave.

That's where Im lucky, the nose of my TT has a decal pinstripe that runs across that sits just above the top of the tailgate, decal can still be seen at night in the glow of the trucks running lights..

So evidently when tire pressure is low you get a lot of sidewall flexing, leading to heat buildup ion the sidewall, delamination and sidewall destruction, per Matt of Winder Towing. Which just happened to him as well!
