OK, I managed to pull off my 1st camping trip....Just me and my 5 kids drove to Florida 2 weeks ago, never have towed anything in my life, that was always the hubby's job when he was alive, and even then we had a boat, so other then what I had learned on here and reading my owner's manual I really had NO idea what I was doing, but we did it! And with no major mess-ups either!!!! I drove the 1,100 or so miles from Rhode Island to Florida to their Fort Wilderness resort, they were so kind to back my pop-up in for me, lol....My oldest son and I got it set up in about 20 minutes or so...couldn't figure out my fridge or heat...which stunk because it was REALLY cold the 1st few nights...someone stole my trailer ball from a Wal-Mart parking lot, I learned my lesson and bought a locking pin. We left after a week and went a little further north into Florida and stayed another week with my mom where I was able to back in the pop-up all on my own!!!!!!!! All my friends and family think I'm nuts for just randomly buying a camper and then for my first trip going that far away with no other adult...but I say hey, whatever, I'm all my kids have since hubby passed and they deserved this...and we had a BLAST!!!!! I feel so free now, I know how to hook it up to my truck, unhook it, back it up...everything!!!! I just have to figure out the fridge and heat...oh and my sink has a leak but I see where it's coming from so it's all good. I want to thank everyone on here for all their great advice and well wishes! You all are a WONDERFUL bunch!

Did you do the long drive at once or did you stop over somewhere? I'm making my first big trip to Ft Wilderness in 43 days, but I'll have my wife with me. I'm still not sure if I'm going to go strait to FL or if I'll do one night in South Carolina.

Wow, sounds like a great trip, good for you for bringing the kids there!

We'd love to have you at some of the many rallies planned for 2009. Fear not, there is NO shortage of folks willing to back your pup in for you!

    New England Campout: May

    CT Rally: July

Rhode Island Campout: August. (All sites are booked, but you could watch for cancellations?)

    Make A Wish Jamboree: September

I hope to see you and your family at some rallies!

Really glad your trip went so smoothly to FL. Any pics from your travels?

What an awesome thing you are doing for your kids! It sounds like you had a great trip, except for the fridge/furnace situation. Your kids will remember trips like this for the rest of their lives.

After my divorce (in no way trying to compare to losing a spouse), I really made it a point to make the most of my time (50%) with my kids and get them out and do fun things with them. Thus came the boat (they love fishing) and the camper. We Tent camped for the first few years, but obvious reason guided us into our PUP.

My kids are always re-telling me and others stories about our camping trips from previous years and always beg to stay longer than a regular weekend trip. I have built up my vacation this year, so I should be able to take quite a few 3-day weekends.

I think they will remember these times more than sitting in front of the TV playing video games at their Mom's house.

They are already telling me where they want to go camping this summer and reminding me that we didn't camp enough last summer. I sure hope they don't grow out of this phase and not want to go camping with Dad when they get older.

I think you would have a blast to get to some of the rallies that Kevin listed. I wish we had some in my area (ND).

No Braclark, we didn't drive staright through, we stopped in North Carolina both on the way down there and on the way back...if it wasn't just me we could have pulled it off but it is all good. Have you been to Fort Wildreness before? If not then you're going to love it, if you have been before then you already know...

Thank you all for the wonderful replies, I'm hoping my children will remember this trip forever, since that's how long it will be before we can afford it again, lol....even the silly little mess-ups made for good memories, like the stolen trailer ball :) I'm looking into a 3 day weekend trip to Washington DC, I hear all the attractions there are FREE!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE FREE!!! I also am going to check into the rallies KMH1596 mentioned....those also sound fun! Just knowing that out in my garage is my little home away from home, my freedom, that I can just back up to it whenever I want and take my kids and myself out of here, away from it all...that is just the best feeling in the world!!!!!

As for pics, I have only posted 1 picture on here before and have since forgotten...can someone remind me?

Good job, it's great to hear about how well your trip went as I worry about my trip. Where did you stay in NC? I've been looking around, and one option I've been looking at is the Charlotte / Fort Mill KOA, but that will be about $50/night, about the same price as Fort Wilderness. The SC state parks are all minimum 2 night stay, but at $13 per night I've been thinking about paying for two nights and then taking off after one. I'm wondering if they do this on purpose to discourage overnight stopovers since it is a great stop on the east coast trip.
