Seemed to feel solid. Made it to a campsite with two Kayaks. Opened the camper, and looks like lag screws are just in the side panels of the roof! The lag screws came down tight and but hard. Feels solid. What could I be anchored in? Wondering if I need to move the mounts further inboard and use carriage bolts and a steel plate on the underside of the roof? Any advice welcomed! I’ll try to figure out how to upload something some pics from my phone. First timer poster here.

Not much wood in these pups, bolt it and put plates on both sides.

If you move them, you will have 8 extra holes in your roof.
Personally, I would have used some sort of block epoxied to the sideboard and roof then used bolts with a washer and nut.

Is there any metal support/structure right at the edges for most of these? I kind of supposed there was some sort of rigid frame along all the edges, and that the wood roof structure sort of fit in between it. Was hoping to hit metal rails along the roof edges, but not sure what is under there.

I think there is literally just 1/2”, maybe 5/8” particles board as side plates with the extruded exterior cover plate connecting the roof to the side plates. I like the earlier suggestion of epoxying and screwing plates or angle brackets to the verticle sides and mounting your frame to those. With as much bouncing as these trailers do, I would NOT trust the current mounts, especially with the weight and wind force the kayaks put on that rack. I’d look at angle alum or steel maybe 1.5” for the rack to mount to, with the verticle flange maybe even being wider. If it’s only 1 1/2” for both, you could just use a longer piece with maybe 3 to 4 thru bolted bolts, washers and nuts (nylock). Better to over engineer than under! Good luck.
