I would aim for the sites least likely to be full, if that could be determined. Campgrounds near a main highway (I10) or Hwy 62 are too accessible. Cottonwood campground was close and on our way, so we camped there. IT was cold and the last night that we ever camped in a tent or on an air mattress. It lead to us buying the Aliner.

Actually, we did try, over a year later, to sleep on an air mattress under the stars - for the Perseid Meteor shower. The air mattress leaked down in a few hours, so we climbed back into our Aliner bead.

I would like to check out hidden valley campground, but if it is full going back to the south side blm area i would have to backtrack an hour. We would be there early afternoon on a Thursday beginning of April. So dont know if there would be spots still open on a Thursday.
