Many people use a wheel bearing grease. I use use Lucas Red and Tacky on it and the weight distribution arms. A little goes a long ways. They make a RV ball grease.

I use white lithium grease, grease the ball 1 to 2 times a season depending on use.. and yes I have gotten the black dot of shame on my shin a few times.. now from the time I get up in the morning until I head in at night I drop the tailgate to prevent walking into the ball and wdh head..

I cut a hole in an old tennis ball, then put it over the metal ball as soon as I unhitch.

I use rubber covers on my greasy balls. They arent but a couple of bucks. They come in several exciting colors, too, if you want a bit of variety. They provide a bit of protection if you are kinda guy that is always getting whacked in the shin by his balls.

I think, yes grease the ball.

But I'm also thinking thr tongue angle is quite a bit off from level with the ball. That could be why it's connecting low.

Is your trailer level with the ball?

This is from his photos above. I think the jaw thing needs to go under the ball a bit. Almost like the ball is too big for the hitch. Just a guess. I never looked at mine, as it always dropped down and i test it everything by rasing the jack so the camper lifts the tv. This looks not right to me. And it will still need lube.

No doubt the jaw is riding too high on the ball.

Yes the jaw is riding to high, it should be lower.. looks as if someone was to cheap to by the right sized ball and tightened the jaw to compensate..

I hate it when the jaw is too high and tight on the ball..

You can see the OP has a 2" ball from his first pics. I wouldn't think you could stuff a 2" ball in a 1 7/8" coupler.

You would think that, but the ball is not yet fully inserted. Its sort of hovering on the rim.

I was thinking more on the previous owner having a 1 7/8 ball and adjusting the jaw to fit.. now it causes a problem with the correct 2 in ball..

A too tight nut that is putting too much tension against the underjaw during coupling is mangling your ball. Its also likely causing damage to the underjaw which could cause premature decoupling. That's not something anyone wants to have happen. Also, proper lubrication will result in a better coupling experience overall.
