Anyone know what kind of snake this is? I didn't realize they could move so fast in the water. I was in the water about twenty feet away from it and man it was cruising, but seemed disoriented and wanted out of the swimming hole. The locals had never seen one in the water there before and believed it may have came in over the waterfall by accident. This was in the Finger Lakes area of NY.

Did it have a triangular head? The resolution on the photo isn't good enough to tell, but I've encountered vipers in the streams here. All snakes can swim.

It doesn't look like it has a triangular head. Most likely a northern water snake.

It's certainly not a viper, you can see that it has narrow head. Their are only 3 poisonous snakes in the Northwest, the rattlesnake, the massasauga, and the copperhead. The rattlesnake and massasauga both have rattles on the tail. The copperhead has a copper head (and often smells like cucumber). All three are brownish in color with very distinct dark patterns such as stripes or spots. We can rule out all three here.

From what I can tell from the picture, you have a black rat snake or the northern water snake. Harmless.

I found this guy in my basement just last week. Its a 5' black racer. [:D] I have no idea how it got into my 12" thick poured concrete basement. [:D] He was released back into my yard. I need all the help I can get dealing with the field mice I have around here. The mice get into and tear up everything.

Nice size! Glad you put em' back. I was reading that many are killed because they are mistaken for a cotton mouth due to their white chin. We have a similar problem out west here with Garter snakes being mistaken for rattlers. Their color and markings can appear similar to a fearful eye. Nice catch though.

No it looks like a common water snake, can get aggressive and bite but are harmless.
Myself have a 4-5 foot blacksmake in my shop, catch him peaking out from under the fridge ever couple days.

Thanks for the input everyone. Consensus seems to be a common water snake. I am trying to educate myself on snake identification now.

There are many snakes that can scare the heck out of you that are harmless...the hognose and the pine snake can put-up a big show to scare you off! The hognose looks like a viper and will actually "strike" at you with a closed mouth! The pine snake can flatten its head and vibrate it tail! Fascinating...but certainly non-lethal! Know your snakes...most would not want to see you either! [;)]
